Healthy skin – file that under the list of things we’re all collectively chasing after. But what exactly does it mean? Is it simply a radiant skin tone or a blemish-free complexion? Turns out, healthy skin is about much more than just appearance. And there is no one better to chat with about this topic than DR AMOUDTHA RASENDRAN and aesthetic doctor at Cutis Medical Laser Clinics, who is incredibly passionate about skincare and making people look and feel good about themselves.
Here, we pick her brain about healthy skin – from what we’re doing wrong with our skincare to the treatments that are worth a try.
How would you define healthy skin?
Healthy skin is more than just physical appearance; it’s about feeling content and confident in one’s skin. Smooth, radiant, even skin tone exuding a youthful glow is the goal! It’s characterised by a smooth, radiant skin tone with balanced oil production and a strong protective barrier. Healthy skin is resilient and can withstand daily stressors like pollution and UV radiation.
As an aesthetic doctor, what is your philosophy towards skin health?
Skin is the canvas that expresses our inner vitality and wellbeing – caring for it is important! A holistic approach would involve being consistent with preventative measures, using nourishing high quality medical grade skincare in combination with a few personalised treatments to keep skin rejuvenated.
What inspired your passion and career in aesthetic medicine?
The main one would be the ability to positively impact people’s lives and make a difference! Skin health and appearance plays a strong role in self-confidence and self-esteem which has trickle down effects on many areas of one’s life. Being able to help someone feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin is incredibly fulfilling. Having suffered with acne and pigmentation myself when I was younger, I do understand the struggle!
Second, it is a field of medicine where there is a melding of artistry, precise technical skills and science with constantly evolving novel advancements, which I find intellectually stimulating.
What are some common mistakes people make in their skincare routines?
Skincare routines must be tailored to the individual. It’s crucial to choose the right products for your skin tone and concerns, use the correct volumes on specific areas of the skin, and apply them at the right times of day to maintain skin equilibrium. Common mistakes include insufficient sun protection, overuse of products, and expecting instant results. This is why a consultation is so important.
What is the relationship between lifestyle factors and skin health?
Healthy lifestyle habits like exercise, hydration, and nutritious eating play a vital role in promoting skin health. They support circulation, hydration, and collagen production, leading to a radiant complexion. By prioritising these habits, you’re not just investing in healthier, happier skin, but also in a healthier, more vibrant you.
Is there a thing such as doing too much and over-treating your skin?
Absolutely! Our skin thrives on a delicate balance, and aesthetically, it’s important to keep our facial features in seamless harmony. That’s where medical expertise comes in – to tailor individual skincare regimes and treatment protocols. This ensures natural rejuvenation while preserving the skin’s balance and integrity.
What are some signature treatments for improving skin at Cutis Medical Laser Clinics?
#1 Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, involves using fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural wound healing response, leading to increased collagen and elastin production. The result is smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. Microneedling can improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, enlarged pores, and uneven skin tone.
#2 Profhilo is a unique injectable treatment that contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body providing deep hydration and stimulating collagen and elastin production. This results in improved skin firmness, elasticity, overall rejuvenation. Profhilo is particularly effective for treating areas prone to laxity, such as the face, neck, and hands.
#3 Ultherapy is a non-invasive ultrasound treatment that targets the deep layers of the skin, including a layer called the SMAS. Building collagen in this deeper layer gives a more defined jawline and a more lifted appearance. Ultherapy can lift and tighten the brows, jawline, chin and neck, providing a natural-looking improvement without surgery or downtime. Knowledge and expertise is required to customize this treatment allowing for precise targeting of specific areas of concern.
The true signature of these treatments lies in the careful selection and precise administration to maximise treatment and achieve the intended outcome for each individual’s skin. Each treatment addresses different concerns and targets different layers of the skin, providing comprehensive rejuvenation and enhancement.
Who are good candidates for these treatments?
These treatments are medically safe and beneficial for most! It’s essential to undergo a detailed and thorough assessment of the skin that allows for a personalised recommendation of the most beneficial treatments for one’s skin.
As an aesthetic doctor, what’s exciting you in the industry right now?
In the realm of aesthetic medicine, I’m truly excited by the advancements driven by a growing base of research and medical knowledge. We are gaining a deeper understanding of the intricacies of the skin, the ageing process, treatment benefits and safety. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness how these developments empower us to deliver treatments that not only enhance appearance but keep patient safety at the forefront of what we do.
What are your top tips for maintaining healthy skin throughout different stages of life?
#1 Sunblock is the ultimate essential on this sunny tropical island!
#2 Invest in medical-grade skincare with high-quality ingredients.
#3 Prioritise an in-depth consultation to understand your skin and its needs.
#4 Don’t hesitate to start treatments earlier. It’s like depositing collagen in the bank – essential for maintaining youthful vitality as we age, enabling us to do so gracefully.
