Science-backed supplements & probiotics we all need!

27th September 2021 by Louisa Lim 3 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/probiotics-and-other-health-supplements-singapore/

These days, there are health supplements for everything. Unable to sleep? Here’s a sleep supplement. Having digestive issues? Pop some probiotics. The myriad of multivitamins for adults out there is enough to make your head spin. Since supplement shopping is far from sexy (and sometimes even confusing), we’re here to narrow down the list for you. From science-backed ingredients to decades of scientific research, here are a few brands of health supplements that we’d love to have between sips of kombucha and bone broth.

Proteus Nutrition’s terrific turmeric extract

Founded by a group of medical and nutrition professionals as a response to the lack of science-backed health supplements available in the market today, Proteus aims to create a range of products – which encompass sleep supplements, multivitamins for adults and delicious dessert protein shakes, amongst others – that are safe, effective, and affordable.

Their latest star product is LPS-Curcumin, a phytochemical extracted from turmeric. Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, it’s been reported to offer a large number of benefits; these include reduced risk of certain cancers, fat loss and inflammation reduction. While curcumin isn’t absorbed into the body when we eat turmeric, researchers have been able to overcome this obstacle by developing formulations that coat microscopic curcumin particles with lecithin, to increase its absorption rate.

The LPS-Curcumin is $60 per tub of 60 capsules, to be taken twice daily.

Super Synbiotics’s super probiotics supplements.

This Swedish company – whose probiotics supplements are based on founder Professor Stig Bengmark’s research on the gut flora – is big on gut health. The professor, who will soon turn 92, has devoted himself to researching the role of inflammation and the gut flora in the development of illnesses such as IBS and autoimmune diseases for the past 30 years.

Manufactured in Sweden, the brand’s signature Synbiotic15 is a mixture of good lactic acid bacteria (probiotics) and fibres (prebiotics), sans additives. The fibres are food for the bacteria so that they can grow strong and multiply once they reach the gut. One shot a day is all it takes to strengthen the immune system, prevent inflammation and poor health, and support your digestive system!

A review of Synbiotic15

“I liked that it was a powder rather than a capsule, and I could just sprinkle it on my cereal in the morning or dissolve it in a glass of water. As long as it’s not heated. It’s a very convenient way of looking after your gut health!” – Rebecca Bisset

A one-month trial is S$98, a three-month commitment is S$250 and a six-month dedication is S$470!

Akesi’s gut health supplements

Akesi was founded in Singapore by Victoria McKellar and Dr Elizabeth Biggs. Their approach is “food as medicine”, and their products are manufactured in Australia.

It can assist digestive health, support the immune system and help to maintain healthy bowel movements.
