I love living in sleeveless dresses and breezy tank tops year-round here in Singapore. Well, that is, until I catch sight of my underarm ‘bat wings’ in the middle of a wave! If you too have found yourself thinking about arm liposuction to help contour your arms – even if it’s just something to consider down the line – it’s always good to be well informed. Here, I check in with DR LEE HANJING, the founder of Argent Plastic Surgery, to find out more about this procedure.
What exactly causes bat wings and flabby arms, and why is arm liposuction a good solution compared to exercise or dieting?
Bat wings refer to the excess fat and loose skin on the upper arms often brought about by genetics, age or weight changes. While exercise and dieting are great for overall weight loss, it’s rare for bat wings and flabby arms to be eliminated by them alone. Arm liposuction is a popular procedure for bat wings here at Argent Plastic Surgery. It works well because it directly removes that stubborn fat while helping to contour and shape the arms.
Who is a good candidate for arm liposuction?
Adults who are within 30 percent of their healthy weight with stubborn fat deposits around the arms that won’t go away with diet and exercise. If someone has good skin elasticity, arm liposuction can give good results as the skin can conform to the new contours.
Is it considered a risky surgery?
No, liposuction of the arms is not a risky procedure under well-trained plastic surgeons. Do inform your doctor of all your existing medical conditions to assess your safety for any surgery.
What’s the difference between arm liposuction and an arm lift? Which one works better for someone with a lot of loose skin under the arms?
Liposuction removes fat, while an arm lift removes excess skin and tightens the remaining tissue together with liposuction. Liposuction doesn’t tighten loose skin. So, for someone with loose and sagging skin – for example, after weight loss – an arm lift might work better.
I will assess the patient and figure out the best approach after consultation. Sometimes, I might recommend radiofrequency tightening, which can be performed together with liposuction to improve the overall outcome.
Should I be worried about arms that are out of proportion after the procedure?
Not at all. An experienced surgeon will be able to deliver balanced and natural results. Every patient is different, and an experienced surgeon will tailor the procedure to suit your body.
Walk us through the process of getting arm liposuction at Argent Plastic Surgery.
We’ll have a consultation where we’ll chat about your goals to see if arm liposuction is right for you. Arm liposuction is done as a day surgery procedure; the surgery itself typically takes under two hours. Postoperatively, you’ll wear compression garments that will help reduce swelling and support the healing process. All necessary medication will be provided.
How long do the results last?
The results can last a long time if you maintain a healthy lifestyle, watch your diet and continue to tone your arms. That’s because weight fluctuations can affect the results.
