These days, cosmetic injections can help with more than just smoothing your forehead or plumping your lips. Specifically, type I collagen injections, a kind of collagen biostimulator, have been gaining attention over the last few years for their ability to replenish the skin’s natural collagen, boost its elasticity and improve skin quality from within, all without dramatically adding volume or changing facial shapes. The results are subtle and progressive, which is exactly what appeals to a lot of patients, says DR LI LIN SY from Fundamental Aesthetic Medical Clinic. Here, we chat with Dr Sy to find out how it all works!

What exactly are type I collagen injections?
These injections are made of heterologous type I collagen, which is a highly purified, medical-grade collagen. Often equine-derived and used in regenerative aesthetics, it is delivered via small injections into the dermis. It’s classified as a collagen biostimulator, which means rather than filling or volumising an area immediately, it’s designed more to improve skin elasticity, firmness, texture and overall quality.
Why type I collagen specifically?
Type I collagen is the dominant structural collagen in adult human skin. In fact, it makes up around 80 to 90 percent of the dermal collagen matrix. Think of it as the skin’s main load-bearing material. When you lose it with age, you get thinning skin, wrinkles and loss of firmness. Injecting type I collagen essentially reintroduces the exact material your skin naturally relies on most.
What skin concerns can collagen injections address, and what can’t they treat?
It works well for fine lines and early wrinkles, particularly crepey skin around the eyes, cheeks and neck. It also addresses loss of firmness and elasticity, dull or tired-looking skin, shallow, atrophic acne scars and uneven texture. Areas like the under-eye, neck, décolletage and hands respond particularly well. That’s because these don’t need volume, they need stronger dermal structure, which is exactly what type I collagen injections target.

That said, it’s less effective for deep folds or significant volume loss. It won’t replace lasers or subcision for deeper scarring either. But it can improve the skin’s baseline quality.
How does it compare to other popular skin boosters like hyaluronic acid or PDRN?
The mechanisms are quite different. Hyaluronic acid adds hydration by holding water in the skin. PDRN works by accelerating cell regeneration and repair to boost collagen production. Type I collagen injections, on the other hand, directly rebuild dermal structure by triggering skin’s fibroblasts and stimulating new collagen.
Each has its place, but if your primary concern is skin quality and firmness rather than facial contours or volume, this is worth considering.
Who is a good candidate?
The treatment suits people with early signs of ageing – typically from the late 20s to 40s – who are noticing fine lines, slight loss of firmness or thinning skin. It also works well for those with dull, low-quality skin who want improved collagen density and a healthier-looking complexion, without altering their facial shape. For younger patients interested in preventive care, it’s a reasonable option for slowing collagen loss and maintaining skin quality long-term.

How many sessions are needed, and how long do results last?
Four to five sessions spaced two to four weeks apart are recommended. The spacing matters – each session activates fibroblasts, and repeated stimulation builds a stronger collagen response over time.
Are collagen injections safe? Is there anything I should check with my aesthetic doctor before going ahead?
Type I collagen injections are HSA-approved, though as with any injectable, outcomes depend heavily on product quality, technique and patient selection. Before proceeding, it’s worth asking your doctor whether you’re actually a good candidate for the treatment and what results to expect, as well as what the treatment won’t fix. You can also find out how many sessions you’ll realistically need to achieve results.
How much do type I collagen injections cost in Singapore?
At Fundamental Aesthetic Medical Clinic, type I collagen injections start from $688 per vial.
