Chiropractors in Singapore & how they can help you!

26th April 2023 by Amy Greenburg 9 Min Read

If you’re looking for a drug-free, holistic approach to healthcare, you may want to consider chiropractic care. This practice uses non-invasive spinal manipulation, called an adjustment, to restore joint function, relieve pain and promote overall wellness. However, chiropractic treatment goes far beyond neck or back pain. It’s used to treat a wide range of health issues. This includes everything from high and low blood pressure, asthma and allergies to acid reflux, insomnia and infertility. Here, we talk to some of the top chiropractors in Singapore about what they do and the benefits of chiropractic treatment.

Genesis Chiropractic

Chiropractic treatment focuses on correcting misalignments in the spine; these misalignments interfere with the nervous system, and can cause all kinds of symptoms throughout the body – everything from migraines and back pain to asthma and digestive problems. A chiropractic adjustment performed by an experienced chiropractor can realign the spine – thus, removing nervous system interference and the symptoms that come along with it.

“Connect, educate and transform” is not merely a motto, but a way of providing care for this top chiropractic clinic in Singapore. Located in the Orchard-Somerset area, Genesis Chiropractic aims to inspire people to make smart choices when it comes to their health and wellness, with natural, safe and effective methods. Chiropractor DR TRAVIS FISHER and his team, with two other chiropractors in Singapore, have provided care to the international community here and other parts of Southeast Asia for nearly 15 years. They use evidence-based methodology to provide corrective chiropractic care programmes tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

According to Dr Fisher, who practises a range of chiropractic methods, the human body was built with an innate healing system. He says that chiropractic treatment eliminates interference of this system caused by misalignments of the spine and joints that result from emotional, chemical and physical stresses on the body. Misalignments put pressure on the nerves, resulting in dysfunction within the nervous system and surrounding soft tissues; they reduce the necessary communication between the brain and body that’s required for the body to function properly. Luckily, chiropractors are highly trained to locate and correct these misalignments with specific and measured adjustments to remove the interference in the nervous system, and restore the proper flow between body and brain.

At Genesis Chiropractic, they don’t guess when it comes to your health. All care is based on methodical evaluation and body testing. Evaluations begin with a consultation, followed by a detailed examination and posture analysis. X-rays are also used when necessary. Recommendations are then made based on an individual’s unique needs, and certain rehab and posture correction therapies may be recommended. Additionally, tailored at-home exercise routines may be advised, based on Dr Fisher’s background in personal training and kinesiology.

But, don’t worry – adjustments aren’t painful. In fact, many patients report a sense of calm after their chiropractic adjustments.

Hear from Dr Travis Fisher:

“At Genesis Chiropractic, we’re not just about helping you get out of pain. We realise that every health issue brings larger consequences and impacts your overall life, which at times, can prevent you from being the best possible version of yourself. As lifestyle experts, we hope to prompt people to cultivate more healthy habits into their lifestyles, especially following the pandemic as people are work at home and some back to the office.

In addition to offering freedom from pain, we offer freedom from unnecessary drugs and surgeries. By removing interference to the nervous system, we often see lives transform. Many people comment on getting resolution for issues unrelated to why they originally sought care. We see ourselves as a team of guardians for the health of the families in our community by guiding each person through a systematic approach that offers results that align with their health goals.

For one person, ‘results’ may be a long-term drug-free solution to their regular headaches. For another, it may be wellness care to ensure their children are growing in alignment with good posture so they face fewer issues as adults. But, the best result is prevention; that is, doing what’s necessary in today’s modern world so we never get a lifestyle disease in the first place. Everyone has their own personal situation. We have to consider this and we tailor care to suit their individual needs. It requires careful monitoring, re-evaluation and willingness to adapt care when needed.”

The Chiropractor

This Tiong Bahru-based chiropractic clinic is run by Australian-Dutch chiropractor VISMAI SCHONFELDER, who moved to Singapore right before COVID, after practising chiropractic in Amsterdam for 15 years. He and his team, which includes another chiropractor, use a gentle chiropractic technique to help individuals with everything from sleep issues and back pain to anxiety and headaches.

He says there are three types of stress that impact our bodies:  physical stress – for example, injuries you may have suffered – mental and emotional stress, and chemical stress, which has to do with everything we put in our bodies (the sugars we eat and the alcohol we drink). These stressors accumulate as we age, and translate into our bodies as interferences, keeping us from living our healthiest lives. Chiropractic, he says, is a “beautiful mechanism to get rid of that interference.”

At The Chiropractor, he removes these interferences by performing gentle chiropractic adjustments that are suitable for all ages. “As chiropractors, we focus on getting the body into a state of grace and ease.”

What to expect from a visit to this chiropractor in Singapore

At The Chiropractor, you can expect your first visit to take around 30 minutes. This will include a thorough discussion of your medical history and a chiropractic examination to determine whether or not chiropractic can help the problem the patient has come in with.

“Each chiropractic session is a holistic experience. I check the major data points from head to toe, use a gentile chiropractic technique that’s suitable for all ages, and perform pre- and post- functional testing to ensure that the individual leaves each session more in balance than when they came in.”

The Chiropractor

Hear from Vismai Schonfelder:

“I’ve had chiropractic care all my life, so it was a natural progression for me to go and study it. I preferred chiropractic over medicine as a study because I prefer to work with the natural laws of the body. And chiropractic is the largest natural healthcare provider in the Western world.

The biggest privilege for me as a chiropractor in Singapore is the one-on-one connection I get to share with our clients. I also value the results that chiropractic naturally provides. Especially after COVID, I notice people are longing for more connection. And what better way to start than by getting your body more in balance?”

Chiropractic First

Chiropractic First specialises in treating problems related to the spine and nerves. For over 20 years now, they have helped patients of all ages with everything from neck, shoulder and back pain to chronic migraines, sports injuries, joint conditions and more – minus any drugs or surgery. Their chiropractors treat everyone from children and babies to adults, pregnant women and athletes. Founded by chiropractor DR MATT KAN, Chiropractic First has over 50 subluxation-based chiropractic doctors across more than 35 clinics in six countries. For their chiropractors in Singapore they are based in 11 locations, including Bukit Timah Plaza, Great World City, One Raffles Place and United Square.

It all started when Dr Kan witnessed the benefits of chiropractic adjustments first-hand. After watching his mother and other family members suffer from chronic lower back pain and migraines, he was inspired to pursue a career in chiropractic after observing the transformative effects chiropractic had on their quality of life, and without the need for any drugs or surgery.

“Among my patients of cabinet ministers, royal families, celebrities, movie stars, renowned sportsmen and rich tycoons, no amount of power and money will be able to help them if their spine is not functioning well. All of them have tried different treatments and modalities for years without results, until they started their specific subluxation-based chiropractic treatment.”

What to expect from your chiropractic visit

Focused on correcting subluxation of the spine and structural remodeling rather than just routine pain management, the first consultation is critical in identifying just where the problems are, how bad it is and the suitable treatment options. The exam is very thorough, including x-rays and/or MRI scans to remove any guesswork.

Additionally, Dr Kan says that the first exam may also include the following:

  • structural imbalance test
  • range of motion test
  • orthopaedic examination
  • eurological examination
  • objective posture and gait assessment
  • a full spine segmental examination

Once the appropriate treatment programme has been identified based on the findings of these exams, Dr Kan says the patient can start their “structural remodeling regime.” This consists of specific, regular chiropractic adjustments at each session to reverse, strengthen and retain proper spine alignment and function. It’s this “specificity and focus on key primary area instead of secondary symptoms” that can be credited for the “permanent and conclusive resolutions” often experienced by so may of Chiropractic First’s patients, he says.

chiropractor

Hear from Dr Matt Kan, who has 23 years of experience in chiropractic:

“It pains me greatly to see patients old and young crying out their frustration of years of debilitating pain, suffering and disabilities, running around looking for help and trying all kinds of different things that didn’t work. The satisfaction of helping each and every one of my patients reverse their health, eliminate their pain and suffering, and restore their quality of life is beyond words. It reminds me of my mum smiling again and telling me, ‘Well done, my son!’

Beyond reversing pain, I take much effort to lead my patients and their family members into prevention and maintenance of strong, healthy spines and nervous systems. Education is of utmost important. Our entire team of doctors believe that every man, woman and child should be checked and adjusted for subluxation regularly. Therefore, my clinic is always filled with patients and their children. We enjoy having children laughing and running around.”

Vitality Chiropractic Centres

Also among the top chiropractors in Singapore is DR SHAAN RAI of Vitality Chiropractic Centres. In fact, according to Dr Shaan, Vitality Chiropractic is the only chiropractic clinic in Singapore – and the first in Southeast Asia – that specialises in Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic treatment, which is used for health issues related to the nervous system. This includes migraines, vertigo, Meniere’s disease and neurological conditions.

Upper Cervical is a speciality focused on brainstem-related problems. Located at the base of the brain and at the top of the spinal cord, the brainstem is responsible for controlling many of the body’s key functions. To analyse this area properly, Dr Shaan uses Computed Thermography (nerve scans) and biomechanical x-rays to analyse patients and provide more specified care. He says that this is particularly helpful in the more difficult cases where patients have been affected chronically. It helps them to “take their lives back.”

Vitality Chiropractic Centres

What to expect from your chiropractic visit

The first appointment is a one-hour consultation to learn more about the patient’s case. Dr Shaan will take your medical history, and perform a physical assessment and nerve scans. He typically sends for for x-rays to be reviewed at the following appointment to determine the next steps.

At every regular appointment, you can expect nerve scans, which help determine when an adjustment is needed. After an adjustment, you can take some time in one of the clinic’s recovery suites to “speed up” the healing progress. You’ll also receive information about the “Do’s” and “Don’ts” to take home.

Hear from Dr Shaan Rai:

“At Vitality Chiropractic, we pride ourselves in taking on some of the most difficult cases – often, where people have lost their ability to work, continue hobbies or even play with their children. These are the problems that really drive me. I’ve always wondered why some people have health problems while others with the same lifestyle and risk factors can live worry-free. The pursuit of this question is what led me to this speciality where, instead of chasing every symptom or body part, we look directly to the underlying cause of the issue, which is often overlooked.

I believe everybody should be able to have their nerve system checked for problems, even if they’re not experiencing any symptoms. You’re always better with a healthy nervous system than an unhealthy nerve system.

To train in this speciality, I undertook additional training in the US, UK, Australia and outreach trips in the Philippines, before opening Vitality Chiropractic. I chair the Charity and Outreach Committee for the Alliance of Chiropractic. We are active in the community, offering free care at local community centres.”
