Mami’s Tamales for a special Mother’s Day date
Celebrate Mum with a taste of Mexico at this Keong Saik restaurant this Mother’s Day, where Mami’s Tamales focuses on one of the country’s most traditional dishes.
Founded by Mexican-born chef Maribel Colmenares, the restaurant is rooted in home-style cooking and family traditions. In Mexico, tamales are often made together – a shared ritual as much as a meal. That sense of connection carries through here.
Each tamale is handcrafted using traditional methods. Alongside the signature tamales, the menu also features lesser-known Mexican classics, offering dishes you don’t often see on local menus.
It’s a good option for a relaxed meal with family, whether you’re familiar with Mexican food or trying it for the first time.
Special offer for EL readers: Get a complimentary signature tamale (chef’s choice) with any main when quoting “EXPAT LIVING”. Valid during the Mother’s Day month; one complimentary tamale per visit.

Allora Ristorante & Bar for a Mother’s Day brunch with European flavours
Allora at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport is marking Mother’s Day with a special Sunday brunch on 10 May from 12pm to 3pm. The line-up includes dishes like chilli crab and a hawker-style chicken rice station alongside its signature buffet spread. Think long tables, plenty of sharing plates, and a spread that encourages you to try a bit of everything.
There’s a European thread running through the menu. Crispy veal schnitzel, pork ribs with apple sauerkraut and beef roulade are offered alongside lighter options like barramundi with mustard cream. The seafood-on-ice section is also a highlight, with prawns, oysters and more. Live stations, including a cheese wheel pasta and freshly made pizzas, keep things interactive.
Desserts cover all bases, from Black Forest to apple crumble and warm puddings, with enough variety to keep kids happy too. Overall, it’s the kind of place where you can settle in for a long, easy afternoon – which, for many mums, is probably the point.
The Mother’s Day brunch is priced at $108 per adult, with Mum dining free with every two paying adults.
Alongside this, Allora’s Frühlingsfest Sunday Brunch runs across selected dates in April and May. Expect a similar mix of hearty European dishes and buffet-style dining with a seasonal spring focus.
