It’s so rare to find good barbers and a full-service hair salon under the same roof in Singapore – let alone one in the heart of Orchard! That’s one reason His & Her HairLoft by Jamie, located in the International Building, has already become a favourite among expats and locals since opening in 2025. From men’s haircuts and premium shaves to women’s hairstyling, colour and perms – and even kids’ cuts – they do it all, so you can easily bring your partner and little ones along for some pampering too.
Here, we chat with founder Jamie to find out more about her two decades behind the chair, what clients can expect at her Orchard hair salon and barbershop, and the best hair tips she wishes more people knew.
Tell us a bit about your background and what drew you to this career.
I’ve been in the hair industry for more than 20 years, working across both hairdressing and barbering, with a very wide range of clients, hair types and styles, from classic and modern men’s cuts, fades and beard grooming to women’s haircuts, colour, perms and styling.
What first attracted me was the combination of creativity and personal connection. A good haircut isn’t simply about following a trend; it has to suit the person’s face shape, hair texture, lifestyle and personality.
Even after more than two decades, I still enjoy that moment when a client sees the finished result and feels more confident. That’s what has kept me passionate about the industry.
What made you decide to open His & Her HairLoft by Jamie, and why Orchard specifically?
After many years in the industry, I wanted to create a place that reflected how I personally believe a good hair salon in Singapore should operate: experienced professionals, proper consultations, quality work and honest recommendations without unnecessary hard-selling. That became His & Her HairLoft by Jamie.
I also wanted to bring barbering and professional women’s hairdressing together rather than limiting the salon to one category. Many of our clients have partners or family members with completely different hair needs, so having both services under one roof makes things much more convenient.
Orchard was a natural choice, it’s central and accessible for both residents and visitors, and being near Orchard MRT and ION Orchard makes it easy for clients to come see our barbers and stylists before or after work, during a shopping trip or while visiting Singapore.
What can clients expect at your Orchard hair salon and barbershop?
On the barbering side, clients can come to us for men’s haircuts, classic scissor cuts, skin and taper fades, beard trimming and shaping, shaving, perms, colour and other grooming services. For women, we offer professional haircuts, layers, colour, highlights, perms, treatments and personalised styling.
We deliberately keep our hair salon in Singapore comfortable and personal, taking time to understand what each client actually wants before starting. Whether someone comes in for a simple trim or a complete transformation, the same attention to detail applies.
Tell us about your team of barbers and hair stylists at this Orchard salon.
Our team is made up of experienced barbers and master stylists with different strengths, allowing us to look after both gents and ladies at a high professional level. Some specialise strongly in barbering, including fades, classic men’s cuts and beard grooming, while our stylists work across women’s cutting, colour, perms and styling.
What matters most to me isn’t just technical skill. I want our team to listen, communicate clearly and be honest with clients, and recommend an alternative if a style or chemical service isn’t suitable. Our goal is for clients to build trust with the team and feel comfortable coming back consistently.
Do you work with expat or Caucasian hair as well?
Yes, absolutely. We regularly work with local clients, expats and international visitors, including Caucasian clients. Different hair types behave very differently, fine Caucasian hair, thick Asian hair, curly or wavy textures all require different techniques. Even within the same hair type, density, growth patterns and previous chemical treatments can change how we approach the service.
Singapore is very international, especially around Orchard, so understanding what clients from different backgrounds are accustomed to is important. For us, it’s never one technique for everybody, we adapt to the individual.
What is your secret to creating the right style for each client?
Consultation. Before I think about cutting, I look at the person: their face shape, hair texture, density, growth pattern and how their hair naturally falls. Then I want to understand their lifestyle.
One of my favourite questions is: “What do you normally do with your hair in the morning?” There’s no point creating a hairstyle that looks fantastic in the salon but requires 30 minutes of styling every morning if the client only wants to spend five minutes on it.
The best style is not necessarily the trendiest one. It’s the one that suits you, is manageable in your everyday life and still looks good as it grows out.
Do you have any hair advice you give your clients all the time – something you wish more people knew?
Don’t choose a hairstyle based only on a photograph. Reference photos are very useful, but the same hairstyle can look completely different depending on your face shape, hair texture, density and natural growth pattern. Use the photo as inspiration and let your barber or stylist adapt it to you.
For men, especially with fades and beard grooming, maintenance matters. A great haircut can lose its shape if you leave it too long between appointments, and a well-shaped beard should complement the haircut and face rather than being treated separately.
For women, I often remind clients that healthy hair should come before chasing a particular colour or chemical result. Sometimes achieving a certain colour or perm gradually is much better than pushing the hair too far in one appointment.
And for everyone: good hair starts with a good consultation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and tell your stylist about your daily routine, previous chemical services and what you realistically want to maintain at home.
What’s next for you and your Orchard hair salon and barbershop?
My focus is on building His & Her HairLoft by Jamie into a trusted destination for both barbering and professional hairdressing in Orchard. Rather than expanding quickly, I want to concentrate on quality, developing our team and continuing to build long-term relationships with our clients.
I’d like people to know that they don’t need to choose between a traditional barbershop and a professional hair salon. Clients can receive specialised services in the same hair salon in Singapore, from experienced professionals who take the time to understand them.
After more than 20 years in this industry, I still believe the fundamentals matter most: listen carefully, recommend honestly and do consistently good work. That’s the foundation I want His & Her HairLoft by Jamie to continue growing on.
