During the year-end festivities of December 2023, the community of Stamford American International School helped to spread some joy to migrant workers. The students, teachers and parents at Stamford American are actively engaged in various initiatives for community projects. By coming together through community service in Singapore, they’re able to make a positive impact on the local community as well as communities around the world.
A thank-you to migrant workers
One of the most recent community projects involved students in the Middle School Service Club and the High School Service Council. They worked together with Mad About Giving (MAG), a nonprofit organisation that carries out various community service in Singapore to reach out to migrant workers here.
Collaborating with MAG provided Stamford American students the opportunity to express their thanks to more than 450 migrant workers in the school’s local community. These workers helped to build the condominium complexes and the structure of Woodleigh Mall, which sits across from Stamford American’s Woodleigh campus. Most of them have not been home in many years while there are other migrant workers newly arriving from developing countries every day.
Community service in Singapore – combined Stamford American school effort
With the help of Carmen Lazo, the Community Service Liaison of the Parent Teacher Association, and the school’s MYP Service Learning Coordinator, Shaylin Chavez, Stamford students reached out to these workers. Across the month of December, students from both the Lorong Chuan and Woodleigh campuses brought in over 1,500 items to donate to the workers. These included daily-use necessities such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and umbrellas.
The items were collected, sorted and packaged by the Middle School Service Club students into 200 gift bags. Each gift bag had an accompanying holiday card made by Stamford’s elementary and high school students.
On 15 December, two migrant workers collected the gift bags from Middle School Service Club volunteers from the Woodleigh campus. It was a timely gift that brought some cheer to the workers.
Shaylin says about this community project, “We were able to embody our Stamford values and connect with our community in a new and meaningful way this holiday season.”
Stamford American International School is at 1 Woodleigh Lane.
