Suddenly I felt guilty. There they were, staring up at me: a whole page of “healthy lifestyle” choices on the menu at Chili’s, the vibrant new American casual-dining restaurant in Tanglin Mall. One option was “Guiltless Grilled Salmon”; another, “Guiltless Chicken Pita”. Low calories, lots of vegetables – just what the doctor ordered.

So what did I do? Opted for burgers, fries, ribs and ice cream instead.

It has to be said: guilt feels good – especially when washed down with one of Chili’s signature Presidente Margaritas.

First up was a plate of “mini” (ha!) cheeseburgers, served with fries and coils of crispy onion. On the side, “Wings Over Buffalo”, a basket of zingy chicken drumsticks.

Next I watched the table sag under a plate of grilled baby back-ribs. These are smoked in-house over mesquite wood and triple-basted with marinades. They’re also sensational, in a messy, meaty way. Recommended sides: mashed potato and sweet corn on the cob.

Unsurprisingly, I only made it halfway through my dessert of caramel-and-apple tart before waving the white flag.

Kids are catered for with treats and activity packs, making Chili’s a fun choice for families. Alternatively, go alone, order a bowl of bottomless fresh-cooked tostada chips and a San Miguel, and watch flat-screen sports till the cows come home.

If you do decide to eat, expect to spend $30 per person on food, and an hour or two afterwards assuaging your guilt.
