We relocated from Los Angeles in 2022, deciding not to bring any furniture. Instead, we packed a few cherished photos, holiday decorations, silver pieces, spices and every lightweight piece of clothing we owned. We wanted to embrace a new aesthetic that was far different from our canyon home in California.

Arete Culture was the perfect fit for our interior design ideas. Our children were back in the States studying, but I wanted to create a home for them when they visited. This is something very important for my sense of wellbeing. Caroline and Nirvi met with us and came up with a look that was comfortable but stylish, reflecting our new location (at HANA in Orchard). We also chose an outdoor lounge set that would work in any relocation.

Our lease expired in March 2024 and on a whim, my husband suggested we look at Sentosa Island – living in Los Angeles and with a sailing background, water is a calming influence for us. When we walked into Cape Royale and looked out over the Singapore Straight, our decision was made instantly. It had an amazing patio with views to Lazarus, St John’s, Batam and back to MBS and the city centre. And the breezes! We can sit on our patio, and it feels like we are on vacation somewhere else in the world.

Most importantly, our outdoor patio furniture and soft furnishings fit perfectly in our new home. Arete Culture helped us place everything and made sure we took advantage of our wonderful sea views in every room. Caroline and Nirvi used mirrors to reflect the ocean views, reconditioned our previous patio furnishings and maximised our new space with three additional pieces.

We love our new home in Sentosa – whether we’re drinking coffee, chatting with friends on Facetime, having a glass of wine or a favourite cocktail, Arete Culture has created a fabulous living space for us.

We’re new to Singapore. Detlef has been here since last July and I joined in January this year. In the first months, my husband was living in hotels or serviced apartments, so it was important to us to find a real home that we could enjoy and feel comfortable in. We were so lucky to find a wonderful apartment on Sentosa – fully furnished and oceanfront. The only thing missing was outdoor patio furniture to enjoy the wonderful and unique view from the balcony – a place to sit outside for eating and relaxing.

We read about Boulevard Outdoor Inspirations in Expat Living. When I was on my look-and-see trip, the magazine was given to me by the property agent showing us around. Once we found our apartment and recognised we needed and outdoor lounge set, we started visiting stores. Entering Boulevard, we immediately felt it was the place to find our new furniture. We liked the style of their products, and sales advisor Paul was amazing with his advice.

Our purchases included an outdoor dining table with six chairs and two lounge sofas (a one-seater and a two-seater) with two small lounge tables plus some accessories (a solar lamp and a tray) – all in a grey colour. We love a lean style and not many colours – style and comfort are our priority. The tables are very robust and easy to clean, which is important with the climate living oceanfront.

We’re very happy with our shopping experience at Boulevard and definitely recommend their outdoor patio furniture for its quality and comfort. The consultation with Paul was fantastic; he gave us exactly the advice we needed but also left us alone when we wanted to digest or discuss things. And he showed us more options when there was something we weren’t sure about or didn’t have the same opinion. Paul knew about trends but also the important aspects of keeping outdoor furniture in this climate – especially living by the sea. This information was so helpful for us as newbies in Singapore.

Finally, the delivery team kept to the estimated delivery date and the communication with them was good and clear. They were fast, clean and took care that everything was in the right place.

Woody Antique House – outdoor lounge set

We had recently moved from Washington DC and were looking for an outdoor lounge set. This was for the balcony overlooking our apartment’s lush green gardens, with large trees by the swimming pool, and a variety of birds flying towards the Botanical Gardens. We knew this is where we would like to have our morning tea and sit out in the evenings with family and friends or finish late-night office calls. As we were settling in, our dear friend and interior architect Sheena Rawla was visiting Singapore, and she helped us with ideas on how to furnish our balcony, too.

We also met a lovely American couple, Beverly and Scott Moss, our neighbours staying one floor above us. They were the catalyst for us to go to Woody Antique House and buy the same design and furniture that they had also bought earlier and were now shipping back to the US.

As the size of the main piece had to snuggly fit the balcony, it couldn’t be anything too large. (Woody Antique House does also have larger pieces, if that’s what you need.) The set we chose is a Brindisi outdoor synthetic wicker model to endure the Singapore rains, and the colour is dolphin grey. It’s a comfortable set consisting of a two-seater sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table.

We are very happy with our outdoor lounge set. It fits the balcony size and gives us an opportunity to enjoy nature and the vibe of Singapore within the confined space. We would go back to Woody Antique House again as they are very helpful and knowledgeable on all types of furniture. They also bring in new stock regularly.
