Easy Halloween recipes: Get spooky!

Throwing a Halloween party and need some cute but spooky treats? We’ve got you covered with these recipes that’ll make your guests go wild! Among the places where we’ve found our foodie inspiration is Pinterest – don’t forget to follow us over there too: expatlivingSG.

Mummified Sausage Rolls

How cute are these?! They might be a little harder to make than regular sausage rolls, but they’re bound to be a fun activity to do with your kids or guests. Here’s the recipe – and there’s a video to watch, too.

Ghost Bananas

This is a perfect healthy option, and they’re also great if you’re technically challenged in the kitchen like a couple of us! Surely we can’t mess these up?!

No recipe for this one, but we’re guessing you can figure it out. All you need are bananas and melted chocolate.

Banana Halloween

Cheesy Broomsticks

Cut cheese strings or sticks in half, and fray the ends to look like bristles. Use a pretzel stick for the handle and tie cheese on with a chive. Find a recipe here.

Zombie Apple Mouth

Cut apples into quarters, carve a wedge in each one to create lips and brush with lemon juice. Spread nut butter or cream cheese in between two lips and decorate with almonds, seeds or raisins to make teeth.

Caramel Apples

Rule one: anything covered in caramel tastes good. So cover some red apples in caramel and dress up like Snow White’s evil stepmother, and your Halloween is sorted.

Bloody Popcorn-filled Surgical Gloves

Popcorn is a healthy snack, and to make it Halloween-themed, fill some surgical gloves with the stuff. Apply fake blood to the gloves, and the kids will be delighted.

Clementine Pumpkins

If you peel a whole clementine, you’ll realise that it looks like a cute mini-pumpkin. Stick a green gummy worm through the middle to imitate the stalk, and you’ve got yourself an edible lookalike pumpkin.

Bloody Lychee Eyeballs

What’s scarier than eating an eyeball? Peel and pit some fresh lychees, or (easier) buy a can and drain the liquid. Put a blueberry or a grape in the hole left by the pit, to replicate the iris. Pour a little bit of red food colouring in the cracks around the blueberry or grape and the result is a very scary looking, but delicious, eyeball. You can also put these in punch and serve your guests a drink with floating eyeballs.

Risotto Jack O’ Lantern Bites

Halloween recipe

What you need:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1.5  cups arborio rice
  • 2 cups carrot juice
  • 1 cup vegetable or chicken stock
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Black olives for decoration
  • Green beans for decoration

Instructions:

  1. In a small pot, mix stock, salt and one cup of carrot juice, and bring to a boil; leave to simmer.
  2. Fry the rice in oil and butter in a large frying pan for five minutes – keep adding quarter cups of juice, allowing liquid to absorb with each addition. Let cool in the fridge overnight.
  3. Once cooled, roll into balls (about two tablespoons each), pressing firmly with wet hands. To form eyes and mouths, cut black olives into shapes and press into the rice balls. To make pumpkin stems, cut small triangles of green beans and stick them on top of the balls.

Peanut Butter and Chocolate Spider Cookies

Chocolate peanut cookies

What you need:

  • Your favourite peanut butter cookie recipe (we like this recipe)
  • Candy eyes
  • Chocolate truffles
  • Semisweet chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Roll the cookie dough into small balls and bake for around 10 minutes.
  2. Remove the tray from the oven and press down a slight cavity in the middle of each cookie, using a small pestle or teaspoon.
  3. Return the cookies to the oven and bake for around 6-8 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  4. Once the cookies are out of the oven, let them cool until room temperature.
  5. Add the chocolate truffle to the middle of each cookie.
  6. Melt the chocolate chips and transfer it into a piping bag or zip-bag, then make a small cut at the end of the bag.
  7. Add the eyes to the chocolate truffle- use the melted chocolate to glue both together.
  8. Draw lines around the truffle to create the spider’s legs.

Mummy Cupcakes

Mummy cupcake

What you need:

  • Your favourite chocolate cupcake recipe (you could try this one!)
  • Candy eyes
  • White buttercream frosting
  • Basket-weave piping tip (Wilton #47 or #48)

Instructions:

  1. After baking the chocolate cupcakes, take them out of the oven to cool completely.
  2. Place the frosting in a piping bag fitted with a piping tip.
  3. Pipe lines back and forth on top of the cupcakes.
  4. Add two candy eyes on each cupcake.

Halloween Candy Bark

If you want something a little simpler, make a batch of this tasty candy. It scores on both looks and taste!

What you need:

  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup white chocolate chips
  • Some candy eyes
  • Some M&Ms
  • Some sprinkles

Instructions:

  1. Line a tray with baking paper.
  2. Melt the semisweet chocolate in a microwave.
  3. Pour the chocolate onto the baking paper and spread it into an even layer.
  4. Sprinkle over the candy.
  5. Transfer the tray to the fridge to set for around 30 minutes.
  6. Remove the bark from the fridge and cut it into irregular shapes.

Capsicum Jack-o-Lanterns

These Jack-o-Lanterns are healthy and easy to make. Take some red and yellow capsicums, slice the tops off and remove the seeds. After cutting out the face shapes with a sharp knife, fill the empty vegetables with lettuce and other salad ingredients. Or, for a hot treat, place spaghetti bolognese inside – the spaghetti spilling out of the mouth looks ghoulish!
