Ready to go the theatre in Singapore? It’s probably been a while since you’ve been, and we think this production about the life and career of Edith Piaf is as good a reason as any to go see a show. We’ve seen this musical by Sing’theatre before and it’s both remarkable and heart-moving. You get to support the arts in Singapore too!
Celebrating a French songstress
Among the most widely known international stars of France is singer Edith Piaf. Long after her passing in 1963, “La Môme Piaf”, or “the little sparrow”, is still remembered in magazine articles, biographies, plays and film.
This April, a musical tribute to Edith Piaf will be staged by one of Singapore’s popular musical theatre groups. Created by Sing’theatre, No Regrets – A Tribute to Edith Piaf charts the rise of Piaf through song. Artistic and Executive Director Nathalie Ribette says, “Sing’theatre was originally created in 2007 to promote the French culture, and we presented No Regrets – A Tribute to Edith Piaf then. We’re reprising it for our 15th anniversary.”
The life of Edith Piaf through song
The revue comprises 20 of Piaf’s songs including classics such as ‘La vie en Rose’, ‘No Regrets’ and ‘The Three Bells’. The songs mark different events that happened in Piaf’s life in Paris, from her troubled childhood to her meteoric rise to international fame for her interpretation of the chanson, or French ballad. They also reflect her unhappy love life and emotional struggles.
Hosted and narrated by Hossan Leong, the show’s cast includes established thespians Mina Ellen Kaye and Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai; Maya Raisha will make her Singapore theatre debut in the show too. The actors will also be accompanied by a live four-piece band.
Besides the all-Singaporean cast, the tribute will include a special appearance by Sofia Poston, the 11-year-old Singaporean who played the title role in Matilda The Musical two years ago in its Asian tour. According to Nathalie, “Sofia will portray Edith Piaf when she was a little girl singing in the street with her father.”
