I had my first eye test at Capitol Optical when I developed myopia in my late teens. The second was in my second year at university, when I decided to try contact lenses. With my last eye test in late 2022, it was time for another one!
First impressions
Capitol Optical, the Myopia Management Centre, at One Holland Village is spacious and welcoming. The shelves are impressive and display a wide variety of frames from many well-known brands. These include Oakley, Ray Ban, Prada, Gucci, Tom Ford, Zegna and my current favourite, Bolon. There’s also a section dedicated to Zeiss, known for its ophthalmic lenses.
Capitol Optical’s myopia eye test in Singapore
The outlet’s optometrist Wei Kian took care of me. We started with an in-depth consultation of my current eye health and my concerns.
Then he conducted the standard vision eye test to determine the current degree of my myopia. This check is usually conducted by both opticians and optometrists when anyone wants to get a pair of spectacle or contact lenses made.
After a series of reading tests, I was relieved to discover that nothing much had changed for my eyesight. I could still use my current glasses and contact lenses.
I wondered whether it was possible to correct my myopia so that I could stop wearing glasses and contact lenses. Wei Kian suggested a pair of orthokeratology contact lenses. They temporarily reshape the cornea overnight to correct myopia, thus providing clear vision during the day without glasses.
Wei Kian adds that teenagers or adults who are active or play sports can opt for this. However, whether they are a good fit depends on their existing prescription. That’s one more reason to get an eye test!
Determining eye health
If you’re a regular contact lenses wearer like me, Wei Kian also recommends getting a comprehensive cornea health assessment. Called the slit-lamp examination, it assesses the front of the eye for potential anterior ocular conditions, such as discolouration of the vision disc or potential for cataracts. A bright light is shone into the eye that’s being checked and a video recording is made.
Looking at the recording of my assessment, Wei Kian pointed out that my eye vision discs were crystal clear, compared to others in their late 40’s who had some discolouration. He was impressed that my cornea was very healthy for my age. That was happy news for me!
Having been a customer of Capitol Optical for many years, it was insightful for me to get a better understanding of the cornea health assessment process for the first time. It certainly gave me reassurance that I have been taking good care of my vision.
Anyone who’s looking to buy a new pair of spectacle lenses or contact lenses from Capitol Optical Myopia Management Centre will undergo both these eye tests.
Myopia management is for children too
As eye health is not limited to adults, Wei Kian strongly recommends these comprehensive checks for children as well. He points out that a child may not understand they have vision problems or may not express vision concerns. These checks can help parents to ensure that their children’s visual health is given due attention.
For parents who are already making a purchase from Capitol Optical, the Myopia Management Centre, these eye tests are available to their children without extra cost. This is because Capitol Optical believes in early detection and fostering proactive eye care for the whole family.
For parents who are not making any purchase, the consultation is available at $25 per child.
