To help bring out the full potential of pupils at Brighton College (Singapore), the school has The Pelican Pathway. This points reward system at Brighton Singapore is modelled on the one used in Brighton College UK.
Developing values for points
The Pelican Pathway is a new reward system for the whole school. It was introduced at Brighton Singapore at the start of the 2023/24 academic year.
To journey along the Pathway, pupils strive to collect Pelican points. Brighton Singapore school staff award the points to pupils. When pupils show any of the seven Values of Perseverance, Enthusiasm, Leadership, Improvement, Creativity, Achievement and Knowledge, the Points are awarded.
The system celebrates pupils who uphold the qualities Brighton values most when it comes to learning, and it aims to inspire and encourage pupils to reach their full potential, wherever their strengths lie. Three Pillars The Prep School pupils also work towards earning Pelican Points within the school’s three Pillars of Progress, Participation and Partnership:
• Progress rewards positive learning, which results in strong academic progress.
• Participation rewards co-curricular contributions that encompass sporting achievements and performances in the arts.
• Partnership rewards collaboration – pupils working with peers, staff and the wider community. This also recognises all aspects of pastoral contribution. Brighton says that rewards across these three pillars are encouraged as they foster rounded, confident children.
Reward system for all
As Brighton pupils accumulate Pelican Points, they are awarded bronze, silver and gold awards during the school’s weekly assemblies. The Pelican Pin and The Pelican Crest are also awarded to pupils who achieve significant Pelican Point totals over the course of the academic year.
Hear from a teacher and pupil…
“The Pelican Pathway has helped us to celebrate the achievements of all our pupils, across all areas of school life. Through this values-based approach to rewards, our pupils are clear on how they can achieve and how they can strive to improve.” – Emma Townsend, class teacher and pastoral lead
“We often talk about the Values and Pillars of The Pelican Pathway in assembly, in our PSHE lessons and in form time. I’m always so happy to win one of the awards as it helps me to feel a sense of achievement. The Pelican Pathway reward system helps our school to be a great place to be.” – Rosalind Price, Year 5
