In Saint Julien’s “Lovers’ Corner”, a gauzy gold curtain shields you from the eyes of other diners, while still letting you feel part of the restaurant. As for its unique view of the river – well, the picture below paints a thousand words. Seventeen men so far have popped the question at this table; and sixteen women, we hear, have answered yes.

After the delicately house-cured king salmon with lemon marmalade, an excellent Hokkaido scallop was inventively paired with Savoy cabbage with smoked duck breast. The highlight of the meal came next, foie gras papilotte: pan-seared and parcelled with mushrooms and quail consommé in a transparent corn-syrup bag, it was sublime.

For the main course, we shared the classic duck confit, and the most tender and tasty venison loin with red wine sauce.

The impressive cheese board comes courtesy of La Fromagerie in Mohamed Sultan Road, also owned by chef Julien Bompard and his wife Edith. Lemon meringue pie and strawberry ice cream on meringue rounded off a splendid meal, all served with discretion and flair by the estimable Ganesh.
