Brunch details: $95 with half a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne; $78 with free-flow selected cocktails and chilled juices; children, $39. Sunday, noon to 2.30pm.

There was a time when kids and brunches just didn’t go. The children would be tugging at your skirt and pleading to go home soon after they’d scoffed their first ice cream.

Now there is an increasing number of restaurants that offer brunches catering to youngsters. The Line at the Shangri-La Hotel is one of them. It has its own mini-buffet station alongside a bouncy castle, and staff on hand to entertain with face-painting, craft activities and balloon-making. My two kids, aged four and six, stocked up on chips and chocolate before bouncing the afternoon away, leaving me and the husband with plenty of time to idle over the buffet spread.

A staff member mans each of the 16 serving stations, regularly replenishing the food. The choice is diverse, too, with Western and Eastern selections from dim sum and sushi to roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. Highlights include freshly shucked oysters, succulent Boston lobsters and juicy prime rib.

A hot dessert counter vies for attention with crepes made on demand. You can flirt with the chocolate fountain, then cool off with an ice cream teppanyaki.

The best bit is that you can enjoy it in peace, while the kids lap up the entertainment.
