Restaurant Review: Barracks at Dempsey in Singapore

Often overlooked because of its hidden location, Barracks hasn’t achieved the fame it perhaps deserves.

If you were fond the old Barracks menus – the ones with little toy-soldiers embedded in them – you will be sad to hear that they have been replaced. Apparently, people kept stealing the soldiers. Shame on them!

However, the new edition still features a good choice of international food on its newspaper-style menus, with something new: the skinny pizza, an excellent lunchtime choice for those who love pizza, but hate the calories.

We tried two varieties: chorizo almond ($12) and ahi taki ($16, tuna chunks, pistachios, port-wine soaked raisins, avocado and herbed roasted tomatoes). They are really just salads piled on top of crispy flatbread, but are incredibly tasty and light.

The macadamia crusted pumpkin salad ($15) was delicious, but the old-fashioned American sliders a little dry for my liking. The sweet potato and truffle fries that come with the sliders, are, however, to die for.

The restaurant and adjoining Camp Bar are located at the back of Dempsey, overlooking the jungle, which looks very pretty when lit up at night. Upstairs is the huge Spa Esprit, so why not pop along with a few girlfriends for an evening of feeding, watering and pampering?
