Swim classes for your water babies

4th November 2018 by Lindsay Yap 2 Min Read

Swimming is an essential skill for children to acquire – for safety’s sake, of course, but also because it’s loads of fun! So, it’s a good idea to start your little ones with swimming lessons asap. With over 20 years of experience, Marsden Swim School offers fun classes for children as young as four months (through to adults and everyone in between). Here’s what you can expect.

Who are the coaches?

Marsden is the only Gold Standard AUSTSWIM swimming school in Singapore; all the swim coaches are AUSTSWIM certified, and the squad swimming coaches are part of the Australian Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association (ASCTA). They also have first-aid and life-saving qualifications under their belt. So, you can rest assured that your young learners are in safe hands.

What’s on offer?

Infants and toddlers

Beginner swimmers aged four months to four years can join small group classes focusing on safety and familiarisation – a great starting point for kids as they test out water for the first time. Parents needn’t watch from the sidelines; they can get in the pool with their kids and witness the moment up-close! During these classes, kids are encouraged to explore and learn at their own pace. It’s recommended to start early as babies (less than a year old) are readier to accept water compared to older children. In fact, the school encourages parents to introduce their bubs to water before enrolling in classes, such as during bath time, for a smoother transition.

Learn to Swim

Starting out with the right technique is important in any sport, including swimming. Marsden’s Learn to Swim classes focuses on correct strokes and techniques in a low-stress and friendly environment. During these lessons, kids are taught strokes including freestyle, butterfly, backstroke and breaststroke, and they get to try out diving, and to master their kicking. What’s more, water safety skills and even some basic life-saving skills are taught. With up to just five swimmers in each class, your little ones will have the dedicated attention they need.

Marsden Club Programme

The Marsden Club Programme has recently launched two new programmes – Junior Club Programme (45 minutes) and Senior Club Programme (one hour). When techniques have been mastered, the coaches focus on helping students swim longer distances with correct stroke techniques. The students must have already mastered swimming in four main strokes and diving. These sessions will also touch on starts, turns and finishes that are important in competitive swimming. Students enter competitions throughout the year.

Where can I take lessons at?

Marsden Swim School has four locations island-wide: The Grandstand at Turf City, Queenstown Swimming Complex, Ang Mo Kio Swimming Complex and the new GESS campus, which has an indoor Olympic-sized pool with temperature control.

How much do lessons cost?

Lessons are charged on a per term basis. Group lessons, semi-private (two students), private lessons and squad sessions are offered seven days a week.
