Chez Vous Hair Salon (Flagship) for a haircut and balayage highlights
The first thing you notice after stepping into Chez Vous is the contrast from the glare of the mall lights. The soft lighting, combined with the amber hues in the décor, provides a very ambient welcome. I was greeted by name by a friendly receptionist who offered a menu of drinks to choose from while I waited for Joyce, the hairdresser and associate director who would be providing the hair service.
Joyce is a specialist in Caucasian hair and, as the appointment proved, also an expert in balayage and root tint. After spending time discussing the various colours, we decided my hair needed a good haircut before starting. This was followed by a full head of highlights and then a root tint to cover greys. The final touch was a Sugar Hair Lamination treatment. As my hair is quite dry naturally, it’s a natural and gentle way to moisturise and smooth dry and damaged hair. Joyce applied the solution, which was left on for 15 minutes before being sealed in with a heat treatment. After my hair was blow-dried and styled, I was amazed by how soft and silky it felt. It also stood up to the infamous Singapore humidity, seeing me through two events in the following days, without one hint of frizz.
I would highly recommend Chez Vous to anyone who is looking for a high-quality and enjoyable hair service. This hair salon in Singapore also has a beautiful and cosy atmosphere that makes you feel pampered and relaxed. It will definitely result in a repeat visit from me.

Expat Hair Studio for root tapping, highlights, lowlights and a trim
I’ve been going to Expat Hair for more than a decade now. Kat has seen (and repaired) many of the mistakes I have made when trying other salons and just gives a wry Scottish chuckle before sorting it out.
The salon on Joo Chiat Road is a lovely, light-filled space. Happy tunes play, and there’s lots of chatter between the clients and the team. It’s not intimidating like some other salons can be, and they make a great coffee. They’ll even pour you a wine if you prefer!
This time, I turn up with “the usual” – brassy blonde ends and dark roots. My hair grows very slowly, so the blonde highlights really fade and flatten by the time I get to see Kat. She suggests we try root tapping – a toner that’s a bit lighter than my natural dark colour is applied to the roots and about 10cm into the highlights, so the regrowth isn’t so obvious. Kat “taps” or smudges the toner so it’s blended for a natural look.
The result is great. It doesn’t affect the lowlights or highlights but just lightens the roots a little and blends the colour to make it all look more natural. She suggests I return in a month or so to get the toner done again. This will also help delay the brassiness creeping in. The haircut then trims the damaged ends and we leave it a little longer at the front to frame the face and make it easier to pull back into a ponytail.
Now I just need to find a date where I want to look fabulous, and book in the toner, wash and blow dry!

Chez Vous: Private Space for a Nanoplasty anti-frizz treatment
I was intrigued: a hair straightening treatment that would last, and without the damage? My Singapore frizz (think Monica in Barbados) has proven to resist keratin and all other attempts to be tamed. I had to try Nanoplasty, promoted to be more lasting but less harsh and non-damaging to hair. Moreover, it’s free of harmful ingredients, eliminating any health concerns.
Finding this hair salon in the Orchard rabbit hole was a challenge. That was until I read the careful description I had received. It’s tucked away in one of Takashimaya’s towers, with a mysterious entrance. What a cute hideaway for a bit of me-time on a Monday morning!
I was led to my private room, which I personalised with a chosen essential oil and meditation music. There’s even a Quiet Chair Service Option. (I love this – since childhood I have dreaded chit-chatting with my hairdresser. And with three kids, I appreciate any time to scroll on my phone). Then, complimentary drinks and a lush head massage to start before my friendly hairdresser, associate director Dee Toh, explained the nature and benefits of my chosen treatment.
With a high-tea selection served during the wait for the treatment cream to do its magic, time flew by. Another scalp spa followed, this time with warm eye moxibustion therapy. The sound of a rainstick, paired with the scents and sensations from heat goggles and a scalp massage, helped me drift into deep relaxation.
Today is day two after my hair treatment, and I couldn’t be happier! I woke up without the usual birds’ nest on my head that screams for a shower before I can show myself to anyone. No more frizz or straightening – I can easily brush through my silky, shiny hair. All it requires is a quick blow-dry after washing. If you’re looking for a private pampering experience with a true transformation of your hair, this is one of the best hair salons in Singapore for you!

Hair Shaka for a hair strengthening treatment for dry, brittle hair
Located amongst the lovely shophouses on Tanjong Pagar Road, Hair Shaka is the perfect escape from the buzz of the city with a welcoming, cosy atmosphere. While enjoying my late-morning latte (the welcome drink menu includes alcoholic options, too), Zey, my stylist, assessed my hair. In recent months, I’d switched to using colouring shampoo after years of highlighting. My hair should be much healthier – or so I thought.
Zey, well experienced with versatile hair types, immediately picked up on how water-deprived and damaged my hair was. He recommended L’Oréal’s Metal DX insalon treatment – an effective and quick fix for my thirsty hair. I learnt from him that copper and other metal particles present in water are major culprits behind colour fading, brittle hair and dryness.
The four-step treatment, which includes a pre-treatment, double wash, conditioning and a hair mask applied under a hot towel, sounded like the ideal solution. And surprisingly, it can be done in just over an hour. Its main purpose is to neutralise metal trapped inside the hair, reduce breakage and preserve vibrant colour by preventing metal-induced oxidation, ultimately resulting in smoother, stronger hair.
For long-lasting results, home maintenance using L’Oréal’s Metal DX shampoo and protector mask is advised. And, if you think you’ll break the bank with this treatment – the entire process is priced at just $100 or $65 as an add-on with other services.

The Sloane Salon for a scalp treatment and deep conditioning
My naturally wavy hair has always been a frizz nightmare in humid Singapore. To control it, I frequently resort to heat styling and straightening treatments, which stress my hair, along with quarterly highlights. Hence, I diligently seek in-salon treatments for damage control.
I was excited to try the Aromatherapy Detox Scalp Treatment at The Sloane Salon as aromatherapy and scents are my passion! It utilises essential oils to restore the scalp’s natural pH balance and cleanse the follicular area deeply.
It began with a thorough scalp and hair analysis using microscopy – a procedure known as trichoscopy. Thankfully, my hair follicles were found to be thriving despite some notable scalp flakiness and sensitivity.
The elaborate regime that followed included an exfoliator to remove impurities, followed by a relaxing head massage. A pre-shampoo scalp spa wash and the acclaimed K18 molecular repair treatment, involving a repair mist and mask, were added to boost the results. After rinsing, the K18 mask acted as a leave-in treatment. A scalp tonic concluded the process.
The post-treatment scalp analysis revealed a magically transformed scalp – flakiness and irritation vanished, replaced by a healthier appearance.
Confidently, I can say this hair treatment met all expectations. It left my scalp clean, refreshed and invigorated while making my hair smooth and moisturised. The added pampering and aromatherapy scents created a truly indulgent, spa-like experience.
Now, I only need to book the next treatment to maintain my hair’s condition. It will surely thank me!

Salon de Edmund hair salon for organic hair colouring
I’d been on the lookout for a great hair salon in Singapore that does organic colouring well. My last one, sadly, left me with darker tones than I’d hoped. But after reading up on Salon de Edmund’s great reviews online, I was excited to give it another go!
Located steps away from the Upper Thomson MRT, the five-year-old salon made an instant impression with its chic black and white tiled floors. So did the friendly staff, who offered me coffee, tea and even some crackers. What’s more, with free Wi-Fi and quiet music, you can easily get some work done too.
The hair salon houses a wide range of quality organic hair care brands and offers dyes that are ammonia-, paraben- and sulphate-free. I felt reassured when my hairdresser Lucas explained in detail the importance of considering Asian hair’s heavier pigment when choosing a colour straight from the dye book. We then settled on a cool-toned, medium-light golden brown for a natural look.
The dye had a pleasant floral scent – none of the nasty chemical odour. Lucas applied it meticulously, then wrapped my hair in cling foil for 35 minutes. After a relaxing wash, head massage and mask), a Nanomist machine provided some spa-like steam to open my hair cuticles.
Once my hair was dried and straightened, I was thrilled to see that the colour was exactly what I’d wanted. It was a glossy cool-toned brown, without the orange or reddish hints I often got elsewhere. Then, my hairdresser gave my hair a quick haircut, adding some soft layers for a natural bounce. I walked out afterwards with a bounce in my step too, glad to have finally found a great hair salon in Singapore I can trust with my hair without worrying about damage.

Bedford & Grove Salon for a custom colour makeover
When you take the lift from the ground floor of Clarke Quay’s The Central to the 21st floor, you’re welcomed into Bedford & Grove Salon by floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Singapore. Once I was seated at a station overlooking Fort Canning, Bedford & Grove’s owner CK explained that my hair presented a “colour trilogy” to address.
As we chatted, she pointed out that my hair was overlightened in a tone that didn’t complement my complexion, lacked contrast to enhance its natural waves and had a few greys that could benefit from her signature “grey-blending”. Honestly, it was a relief to have someone articulate a solution to my usual “I’m not sure what I want – just make it look good”!
CK sees herself as a new kind of colourist – a problem solver! She has over 20 years of training and experience in top salons from New York and San Francisco to Singapore, and has worked in everything from investment banking to marketing at L’Oréal. Now, however, she has found her true calling as a master hair colourist. CK says she often needs to “colour-correct”, and her international background gives her a deep understanding of various hair types and textures, allowing her to focus on exactly how to enhance and accentuate your hair to bring out its best.
The Bedford & Grove team are all specialists. So while CK focuses on colour, other team members – like Diva – are expert cutters. In just two and a half hours, they transformed my hair into a lighter, warm chestnut base using ammonia-free formulas and strategically placed golden highlights. A cut followed, to revive the curls.
I absolutely love what CK and the team achieved. If you’re looking for one of the best hair salons in Singapore for something more than just a touchup, I’d recommend booking your appointment with her at Bedford & Grove today.
