1 September - 31 October
Abstract Creatures is an art installation to celebrate the launch of Studio SML, a self-initiated project by The Press Room to document the stories of Singaporean designers, and all the struggles, sacrifices, and rewards that come from pursuing a career in the creative industry. Categorising studios into small (S), medium (M), and large (L), Studio SML functions as a progressive archive of all Singaporean designers across different fields.
The title is a metaphor for how each design studio is like a unique animal of its own; something that listeners will discover through listening to the Studio SML podcasts. Each designer grows their company organically following their creative philosophies, and this often happens intuitively and spontaneously. Thus, each studio is like a creature with its own abstract line of thought, evolving at its own pace over time.
The installation will feature the first five studios that were interviewed for Studio SML: Chang Architects, Ecoid, Gabriel Tan Studio, Scene Shang and Zarch Collaboratives. Ranging from a one-man firm to over 30 employees, these studios cover areas like architecture, furniture, product design and more. Abstract Creatures represents a microcosm of what Studio SML will eventually grow to become.
