Since 1995, the Singapore Ballet, formerly known as the Singapore Dance Theatre, has been enchanting audiences with Ballet Under the Stars. Now the ballet performances return to Fort Canning Green over two weekends, 30 August to 1 September and 6 to 8 September.
This year’s event continues to blend the timeless elegance of classical ballet with the bold creativity of contemporary ballet. The result is ballet that’s more accessible and engaging for all audiences. Janek Schergen, artistic director of Singapore Ballet, says: “Many audiences see our performances only as this yearly event. The company is combining the best of its classical and neoclassical repertoire to craft an evening of dance performance in Singapore that will appeal to the widest possible audience.”
What to expect at Ballet Under the Stars
Janek’s vision for Ballet Under the Stars is to create an experience that resonates with both long-time ballet enthusiasts and newcomers alike. The performance aims to showcase the versatility and evolution of ballet as an art form, by presenting a mix of classic pieces – like Cinderella and Don Quixote – alongside contemporary works by Singapore’s own Choo-San Goh.
Choo-San is a world-renowned choreographer who made history as the first Asian choreographer represented in the world of international professional ballet. His work recently featured at the Kennedy Center in June.
In fact, according to Janek, Goh’s ballets are “the jewels in the crown of Singapore Ballet’s repertory”.
Singapore Ballet brings ballet to a wider audience
Traditional ballet performed in ornate theatres with quiet audiences can be overwhelming for anyone new to the dance style.
Ballet Under the Stars offers a more approachable way to experience a dance performance in Singapore. It combines a welcoming outdoor atmosphere with excerpts of traditional ballets and a selection of contemporary pieces. The focus is on the dance, which breaks down any barriers to enjoying the spectacle.
This is great for anyone curious about ballet, whether you’re a seasoned fan or introducing the art form to young children. It’s an opportunity to see ballet performances in a new light as they unfold under the open sky. Add stunning costumes and challenging choreography, particularly in the works of Choo-San Goh, and you can see how Singapore Ballet has evolved.
Why have dance performances at Fort Canning Green?
The informal setting of Fort Canning Green brings ballet closer to audiences. It transforms the traditional viewing experience into something far more relaxed – the open-air concept strips away the formality often associated with ballet. The result? A dance performance in Singapore that audiences can truly engage with. Viewers get to sit under the stars with friends or family, enjoy a picnic and be immersed in the beauty of dance.
