Thread lifts are often seen as a modern, less invasive way to lift your face. But can they really replace traditional face lifts, and how do you know if a thread lift is right for you? We sit down with DR LEE HANJING, a female plastic surgeon and the founder of Argent Plastic Surgery, to get the lowdown on everything you need to know about getting a thread lift in Singapore.
What is a thread lift and how does it work?
A thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure performed through a tiny needlepoint, like drawing blood. A thread lift in Singapore can be done comfortably in the clinic under local anaesthesia. The procedure uses dissolvable threads to reposition fat pads that have descended (which contribute to issues like nasolabial folds and sagging jowls) back to a more ideal position as well as tighten and lift the skin layers upward.
This helps with rejuvenating the face, reducing the folds and improving tissue laxity. As the threads dissolve, new collagen is stimulated, providing longer-lasting results. Generally, threads can last from six to 18 months, depending on the brand of threads used. Common materials in threads include PDO, PLA and PCLLA, with increasing longevity in the results in that order.
What are the differences between a thread lift and a traditional face lift?
The key differences between a thread lift and a traditional face lift are:
- A thread lift leaves no scars, unlike a face lift which typically leaves a scar running from in front of the ears, extending around to the back of the ears and the hairline.
- There is no downtime with a thread lift.
- A thread lift is ideal for mild to moderate laxity. If there is a lot of excess skin, a traditional face lift will provide more optimal results.
- A thread lift is done in a clinic setting under local anaesthesia.
- The results of a thread lift are not as long-lasting as a traditional face lift. Thread lifts generally last six to 18 months, depending on the type of thread used. I prefer using PCLLA threads, which can provide lifting results for up to 18 months.
What types of thread lifts are available in Singapore at Argent Plastic Surgery?
We provide PCLLA threads as well as PDO threads.
How do you decide on the right thread lift for your patients?
I discuss the patient’s goals and expectations, such as whether they want longer-lasting or shorter-lasting threads. I also assess the severity of the facial laxity and the degree of fat descent.
Who is a good candidate for this procedure?
An ideal candidate is someone with mild to moderate laxity, typically in their 30s to early 60s.
What are the benefits of getting a thread lift in Singapore?
The procedure is fast, minimally invasive, requires no downtime, leaves no scars, does not involve surgery and has lower associated risks.
What areas do thread lifts work on?
Thread lifts work on many different areas. These include the cheeks, nose (to improve height and projection), submental region (to reduce the appearance of a double chin) and lateral brow (for a brow lift).
Are the results permanent?
No, the results are not permanent. They generally last from six to 18 months, depending on the type of thread used.
What’s the maintenance or follow-up like?
Patients typically need a follow-up seven to 10 days after the procedure, and again two to three months later. No maintenance is required.
Are there any misconceptions about thread lifts you’d like to debunk?
One common misconception is that a thread lift can replace a traditional face lift, but that’s not the case. If a patient is assessed to require a traditional face lift due to severe laxity, excess skin or significant fat descent, the results of a thread lift will not be as optimal. It’s best to schedule a consultation with your aesthetic doctor or surgeon to determine your suitability and explore your options.
