Trimmings Salon & Spa for manicure and pedicure
Reviewer: Cherry Lai
I had been craving a mani-pedi that doesn’t only pretty up my nails but soothes my mind too. And Trimmings Salon & Spa, tucked away on a quaint stretch in Dempsey Hill, was exactly what the doctor ordered. In fact, I already felt the day’s stress melting away as I strolled up to the greenery-enveloped premises – the treatment hadn’t even started!
Warm staff, slow jazz tunes and a relaxing fragrance welcomed me into the mani-pedi area framed by impressive floor- to-ceiling windows (a rarity for salons in Singapore) that overlook the gardens. I picked the Aromathérapie manicure and pedicure, which proved to be a divine one-and-a-half-hour escape. As I sipped ginger tea, my manicurist Shan and pedicurist Helen buffed, shaped and painted my nails before lavishing my tired hands and feet with a moisturising scrub and massage using their house-prepared jojoba beads scrub, sweet almond cream and essential oil. I silently wished that time would stand still!
What made the biggest impression at Trimmings was the staff’s patience and professionalism. I had some concerns with inflamed skin on my toes and also some stubborn calluses. Helen attentively soaked and exfoliated them away – my heels had never felt so baby-smooth – while walking me through their causes and effective remedies. Her expertise reassured me that my feet were in capable hands.
From the lush salon seats, I watched the sun go down and a few wild roosters roaming around. The whole experience was heavenly. I left with beautifully groomed nails, pampered feet and a sense of rejuvenation, already dreaming of my return.

Beautylane – gel manicure and pedicure in Singapore
Reviewer: Cherry Lai
With its pretty purple shopfront, Beautylane on East Coast Road is hard to miss. More impressive is that this Singapore beauty and nail salon has been around for 33 years! A long-time favourite in the neighbourhood and beyond, it offers everything from facials to hair removal, micro-needling to light therapy. On my most recent visit, with my bare nails needing some extra love, I went for their popular gel manicure and pedicure.
It’s a surprisingly large salon – lush green velvet curtains open up to four private treatment rooms at the back. And there’s a row of large comfy seats for mani-pedi out front. I was happy to hear that the team uses a made-in-Korea gel nail polish brand, coming in a vast colour selection and a high gloss finish, that does less damage to nails. My pedicurist and manicurist were friendly, gentle and skilled. First, they treated my nails to some shaping and buffing, before lathering my tired feet in a tangerine foot scrub. It smelled heavenly! My manicurist also noticed that my nail beds were on the thin side and recommended some ways to strengthen my nails.
Two to three coats of gel nail polish and a few rounds under the UV light later, and voila – my nails had come back to life! The final touch: a bit of nourishing cuticle oil, and a much-welcomed mini massage on the lower arms, feet and calves to release some tension. It’s been a couple of weeks now and my nails still look as good as new. Thanks to the team’s warmth and expertise, it felt like a delightful one-hour escape during a busy week. Beautylane also offers the Bio Sculpture Gel (removable with a soak) and Gelish (a longer lasting polish without the thickness of gel) manicure and pedicure, which I’ll have to return for.
Beautylane is at 144 East Coast Road.
