Meet Expat Living’s Review Crew. Our mission? To show up unannounced at F&B spots across the island, try out the best that Singapore has to offer, and then give you our honest thoughts (yes, we pay for everything!). This month, we’ve started with a bunch of popular ice cream joints, where we sampled vanilla, chocolate and one speciality flavour at each one. Tough gig, right? Here’s how it all went down.
# Salted Caramel
Wow! There’s a reason this place has this name. Hands down, it serves up the best salted caramel we’ve ever tasted – and the vanilla was darn good, too. While the décor isn’t too fancy, this spot won our inaugural taste-off. We can’t wait to go back!
246F Upper Thomson Road
# Udder’s
There are Udder’s outlets all over Singapore, but to make it easy, we walked to the one that’s right next door to Salted Caramel. Udder’s has a super cute theme and is known for its alcohol-based ice cream flavours. It’s a very popular joint, but we thought the ice cream was pretty average.
246D Thomson Road (and other locations, too)
# Butterknife Folk
This take-away spot has the most unusual ice cream flavours we’ve ever encountered: Barrata (cheese ice cream with a raspberry balsamic reduction); Kaya Toast; Baklava and more. And you know what? They’re all delicious! Each could have been an award-winning dessert on MasterChef. And this place has lots of allergen-free versions and vegan options, too.
238 River Valley Road
# The Daily Scoop
By far, this place has the best feel and the most friendly staff. And you get to watch the ice cream being made right in front of your eyes – yum! The vanilla and chocolate were spot on – just like our mums used to make – and the coconut was fabulous, too.
43 Jalan Merah Saga (and other locations, too)
