10 ways to spoil her on Mother’s Day

5th April 2020 by Lindsay Yap 7 Min Read

https://expatliving.sg/mothers-day-gifts-things-to-do-singapore/

Another Mother’s Day (10 May) is fast approaching; have you made your plans and bought your gifts? Plan ahead and make sure you show that special mama in your life how much she really means to you. Whether it’s some fancy new accessories, a photo book or a home spa day, these gifts and experiences are sure to leave mum (or your wife) feeling very spoilt.

Help mum to accessorise

Forbidden Hill pink and blue silk cuffs

Get mum a special gift at Forbidden Hill this Mother’s Day. The store carries jewellery and lacquerware collections designed in Singapore and inspired by Southeast Asian cultures. And each item comes in a silky cloth pouch inside a beautiful gift box!

What to get

  • Pick up an elegant silk cuff (from $140) that comes with interchangeable silk slides in various colours and clip-on metal medallions, from the Peranakan-inspired Nyonya Blossom to the beautiful Lotus Flower.
  • Featuring interchangeable inserts of Thai silk and precious metals, mum will love Forbidden Hill’s elegant silk bangles (from $195). There are three collections to choose from: the Hue range pays homage to the lattice pattern found in the Purple Forbidden City in Hue, Vietnam; the Lotus collection is inspired by regional blooms; and the Iskandar bangle is inspired by Iskandar Shah, last ruler of the Kingdom of Singapura.
  • Or you could get mum some earrings from their new collection. The Hoi An collection ($115) is a modern take on lanterns in Vietnam, while the Ban Zu collection ($145) is inspired by motifs on Chinese wares that were traded in olden-day Singapore.

Order a personalised photo book

Artitude Designs memory books Mother's Day

Who doesn’t love looking back at old photos? Help mum keep all of her precious snaps in one place by getting her a customised photo book ($370) from Artitude Designs. Owner Sherin Qadir lovingly puts together memory books for all sorts of occasions, including Mother’s Day. She has years of experience in advertising and graphic design under her belt, so you know that your gift is in good hands. Each order of the hardcover photo book (30 pages) comes with a digital flip-style version that can be shared online. Plus, there’s free delivery in Singapore.

All you need to do is to send Sherin the photos you want to include (via Dropbox or Google Drive) and leave the rest to her! She’ll pick out the photos, edit and beautifully lay them out alongside embellishments, quotes, captions and notes. Unlike generic photo books with standard templates you find elsewhere, you’ll be able to get a personalised one which mum can cherish for years to come.

Deal! Order before 24 April and get 25% off your Mother’s Day memory book. You could also purchase a gift voucher for mum to redeem a memory book of her choice (six months’ validity). Buy the voucher before 10 May and get it at just $270 (usual price: $370).

  • Why not get mum some candles? Offering up to 30 hours of fragrance, Aleyda signature soy candles ($76 for two 3.5 ounce jars) come in three scents: sage and driftwood, crushed lime and sea salt, and blood orange and bergamot.

Don’t we all love a home makeover!

If you are looking for some easy, low-commitment ways to spruce up your home for the new year we have six tips on how to do a home makeover from Caroline Chin Geyler (link on our stories) she’s the founder and principal stylist of award-winning interior styling firm Arete Culture.

The company is a four-time Gold Winner in our Expat Living Readers’ Choice Awards (2017-2020) in the interior design and home styling category so they certainly know their stuff.

As well as some fab tips she’s offering a special Chinese New Year makeover offer, too. At last our homes can look as stunning as these do @areteculture

Guys: did you know that your skin is structurally different from that of ladies? For most men, androgen (testosterone) stimulation results in skin that’s thicker and tougher than women’s skin. This also means you might need something more than just your wife’s, mum’s or sister’s moisturiser or face wash!

Lumin was founded on this concept; this California-based online store offers simple yet effective skincare for men, tailored to different skin types and concerns. So, whether you’re looking for a good face cleanser or a moisturiser for men, this is one brand to check out.

To differentiate Lumin from other men’s skincare brands, founders Richard Hong and Darwish Gani flew to South Korea to work on formulas that benefit the thicker and more stubborn skin constructs of men. Most of the ingredients used are powerful plant-based extracts like ginger root, rosemary, coffee and shea butter. The paraben-free and cruelty-free brand also makes a point of avoiding unnecessary nasties commonly associated with popular off-the-shelf products.

If it’s your first time shopping for men’s skincare, you’ll be glad to know that the Lumin experience is simple and fuss-free. Just fill out a brief questionnaire and you’ll get a personalised skincare regime that’s suited to your skin type and lifestyle. You can choose to go with a one-time purchase or have your products delivered on a subscription basis. Alternatively, shop from the curated range of skincare sets catered to different budgets and preferences.

The rain and cold winds getting you down? A warm beverage and maybe a good book to snuggle up to might just chase the blues away!

If hot chocolate is too mainstream for you, could we offer up this red velvet alternative? @littlefarms have a wide selection of oat milks, almond milks and soy milk options.

Since it's #Veganuary, we recommend using dairy free milks to recreate this recipe....

2 cups non-dairy milk of choice
4 medjool dates (pitted)
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1/2 teaspoon beet powder

Add the milk and dates into a saucepan.
Heat, over medium, until it reaches a simmer. Add the warm milk with the dates and the remaining ingredients into a high speed blender.
Blend until completely smooth and creamy. Serve and enjoy!
