When Anaita Thakkar moved to Singapore from Hong Kong, she discovered many brands that sold costume crystal or fine jewellery at inflated rates. But there was no one that designed or sold artisanal handmade gemstone jewellery. This propelled her to create Lustre, a label that specialises in it.
A self-taught designer, Anaita only creates jewellery that has a genuine personal connection to her, either symbolically or through her life experiences. Each piece is crafted from an all-natural gemstone – or two or three – and personally worn and tested by her, before being produced in limited batches, to fulfil her vision of providing luxury products at modest prices.
Whether it’s stingray-leather cuffs studded with black onyx or a cascade of earrings dripping with malachite, Lustre celebrates original craftsmanship with baubles that are handcrafted by artisans around the globe.
With fun names for different collections – like DNA for the ultra-trendy chain necklaces and Gumdrop for chunky rings with a pop of colour, amongst others – there’s something for everyone, from bold statement pieces to more understated everyday items. The best part? You know that what you’ve bought is a limited-run, handmade piece.
Artnash Bespoke Jewellery
Bespoke jewellery is personal. That’s why jeweller Aarti Sonawala always starts her conversations with clients by asking “why” and “what”; why is the piece important, and what is it intended for? Perhaps it’s a special birthday, an anniversary, an engagement or a wedding. Whatever it might be, Aarti likes to know her client’s ideas, experiences and stories. From there, she determines the budget and chooses the diamonds or gemstones.
The aim is to offer clients the biggest possible stone without compromising on colour or clarity. Once the design is computer-generated and the cost agreed upon, it’s usually only a four-to-six-week wait for the piece to be finished. And no occasion is too small for a great piece of jewellery!
Email firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss your custom jewellery ideas; or, for updates and information, visit Artnash on Instagram @artnashsg.
There’s been a renaissance in demand for platinum jewellery, and if you’re one of those folks who’ve got your eyes on it, be sure to check out Facets. This homegrown brand is one of the few jewellers in Singapore who create jewellery out of this silvery-white noble metal.
But here’s the wonderful thing: whatever you choose, be it platinum or any other precious metal, every bespoke piece created by this brand comes discreetly embedded with a high-grade 1.20mm single-cut diamond – a proud hallmark of a genuine Facets creation.
Facets, you see, has been a trusted family-run diamond wholesaler for over 40 years. They’re able to get their hands on conflict-free diamonds from a global supply network spanning four continents, working only with polishing factories who comply with fair labour practices and environmental protection standards. Only the best hand-selected diamonds – they say 0.1 percent of all gem diamonds mined worldwide! – make the cut here. All diamonds above 0.30 carats come with a GIA-grading report too. They will also reset your vintage jewellery, if that’s what you prefer.
Still unsure? The online store and blog (blog.facetsingapore.com) is filled with sage advice from in-house jewellery experts to help you get started!
GIOIA Fine Jewellery
GIOIA Fine Jewellery is led by creative director and experienced jewellery designer Cheryl Woon. The specialty here is bespoke custom-made jewellery, with rare coloured gemstones such as unheated royal blue sapphires, padparadscha sapphires and pigeon blood rubies, all available to incorporate into designs.
You can select from a wide range of gemstones, including ruby, emerald, sapphire, spinel and the uber-premium paraiba tourmaline. Paraiba is often used in luxury jewellery and is touted not only as the most valued gemstone in the tourmaline family, but one of the rarest gemstones around. The unique neon greenish-blue colour of paraiba tourmaline from Brazil is absolutely eye-catching!
Each precious gemstone at GIOIA is handpicked for its brilliant colour and quality, and the team really display their creativity when informing clients about the story behind the gemstones and incorporating them into their designs.
Check out their work on Facebook (fb.com/ GIOIAFineJewellery) and Instagram (@gioiafinejewellery)!
This brand’s “ethics meet aesthetics” ethos is precisely what we need as we sashay into the future. For one thing, it only procures diamonds from well-established companies that comply with The Kimberley Process, which is in place to stop the flow of conflict-free diamonds. La Putri also works with a small number of reputable gemstone cutters and suppliers to support environmental protection and fair labour practices, and to offer full traceability and transparency.
Those who’d like to customise their own sustainable sparkle will be fizzing with excitement to know that La Putri has close to 50 years of experience in the area! (It launched back in 1973.) Just bring in your old pieces, or select a natural gemstone from the extensive collection, and let the designers and master craftsmen work their magic.
Otherwise, there’s always the ready-to-wear collection, which is crafted from 18 karat gold or recycled gemstones where possible. These iridescent jewels are available in various sculptural silhouettes. Visit the store to pick your favourite – or three.
Rachel P Jewels
Got a piece of family heirloom that seems outdated and in need of a makeover? Rachel Pang is your go-to girl!
What truly sets her apart isn’t her 18 karat diamond earrings worthy of princesses – though these almost made our eyes pop out of their sockets! – it’s the range of restoration services she offers.
Whether it’s remounting an old stone, restringing those vintage pearls or resizing that ring, Rachel, with a team of experienced craftsmen behind her, will help you turn something tired into something terrific. She also offers regular repair or polishing services (we call it jewellery spa!) so your investment pieces will always look brand new.
Of course, there are bespoke services available, too, on engagement rings and fine jewellery – Rachel is willing to travel to the ends of the earth to find you the right gemstone. Or pick the Surprise Me! Option if you’re feeling adventurous. We reckon you won’t go wrong with someone who comes from a long line of family jewellers.
