The flagship property of the family-owned Ovolo hotel group launched in Central back in 2010. And this Hong Kong hotel continues to make its mark today! EL’s Judit Gál tells us about her recent stay.
I recently spent a couple of nights at this boutique gem in Hong Kong. It’s located along quiet Arbuthnot Road between SoHo and Tai Kwun on Hong Kong Island. The neighbourhood is a unique place, full of history, with many colonial buildings, temples, markets, art and a general feeling of liveliness and innovation. This Hong Kong hotel in Central is a great base to explore bars, restaurants, malls, galleries and also the Mid-Levels Escalator, which was one of the things I wanted to fit into my short trip from Singapore. Hong Kong Park and The Peak Tram are a pleasant 10-minute stroll away, too, and so is the iconic Hollywood Road, well known for antiques, temples and funky shops where you can get a real taste of old and new Hong Kong.
Rooms
The building itself is a narrow apartment block with only two rooms on each floor. That means no noisy corridors with guests coming back late at night! There are three room types. You can choose Platinum, Gold and the signature Radio Suite, designed to cater to the everyday rock star.
I stayed in a spacious Platinum Room facing Arbuthnot Road. It had absolutely no outside noise and a good-sized table for work – a big pro if you’re here for business.
The modern, tech-savvy room is decorated with unique elements, and equipped with a huge retractable flatscreen smart TV, adaptors, Wi-Fi, and a king-size bed with firm mattress and comfy pillows. There’s a roomy bathroom (with hair conditioner!) and free coffee and tea.
Facilities
I loved the artwork all over the hotel, which continues the rock-and-roll vibe. The free lollipops at the lift lobby were also a nice touch. There’s even a 24-hour free self-service laundry in the hotel. Near the laundry is Ovolo’s event room, which is called “B.i.G”. This is ideal for small- and medium-sized meetings or celebrations, and features a scene-stealing artwork of David Bowie blowing bubble gum. There’s also a large flatscreen TV, built-in speaker system and private balcony in this room.
You can have your breakfast – or any meal of the day, for that matter – at Ovolo’s restaurant VEDA. Inspired by modern Indian homes, it serves vegetarian dishes that are minimally processed yet rich in flavour, while also using sustainable materials and practices wherever possible.
Other pluses of a stay at Ovolo Central include Apero Hour each evening, where the first drink is on the hotel. Guests also get free gym access and fitness classes at two outlets of PURE Fitness, a stone’s throw away from the property.
Ovolo Central is at 2 Arbuthnot Road, Central, Hong Kong.
