Best bars to catch the FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup returns this year from 14 June to 15 July, and if watching it at home just doesn’t feel right, why not head out and cheer on your home country or your favourite team with fellow football fans? Here’s a list of great bars in Singapore where the atmosphere promises to be electric.

With 13 TVs downstairs and three more in The Malt Room upstairs, McGettigan’s is bound to be buzzing for the duration of the tournament. While you catch that critical match, keep your tummy satisfied with the Irish pub’s delicious menu, available until 10pm each day. Yummy eats include chilli beef nachos, chicken wings and portobello mushrooms; or, if you’re feeling more peckish, opt for the sirloin steak, fish and chips, or grilled salmon. (Watching the calories? Try the vegetable noodles or a quinoa salad.) For a sweet treat, there’s sticky toffee, Bailey’s and salted caramel cheesecake, along with double chocolate brownies. As night falls, you can order from the After Dark Bites menu, which runs until midnight – perfect for the late games. Psst… During each World Cup clash, guess the first goalscorer and enjoy a pint on the house! Come in your national team jersey are pints are $14 nett. Other deals include four pints for the price of three, and two pints plus a nachos or chicken wings for $45. 3A River Valley Road, Merchant’s Court 6837 0577 | mcgettigans.com/singapore

Boomarang Bistro & Bar

Boomarang bistro and bar FIFA world cup
Grab some pals and head to Boomarang

Each Boomarang outlet has 10 screens for the action this June and July, with TVs ranging from 65 to 85 inches. At Boat Quay, there’ll be room for a couple of hundred fans, while the bigger Robertson Quay incarnation of Boomarang will fit more than 350 – all with great views of the games. During the on-field action, fuel up with sharing platters, burgers, pizzas and hearty mains including bangers and mash, lasagna or filet mignon. You’ll also find great snacks, including chicken wings, potato wedges, grilled skewers and sliders that make for an easy feed as you cheer on the teams. There are drinks for all tastes too, from coffee, juices and smoothies to premium wines, spirits, champagnes and cocktails. Psst… On Wednesdays, enjoy the Beer and Burger night where you pay just $27++ for a schooner of beer and your choice of a wagyu, kangaroo or chicken schnitzel burger. Also, enjoy Happy Hour deals from 5pm to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 2pm to 8pm on Sundays. 6536 4990 | Boat Quay: 52 Circular Road 6738 1077 | Robertson Quay: #01-15 The Quayside, 60 Robertson Quay boomarang.com.sg

Picotin Express

Picotin FIFA world cup
Drop by Picotin to catch the matches

It’s all systems go at Picotin Express for the FIFA World Cup, both at the Bukit Timah outlet, with its panoramic views of the Champions Golf Course, and the East Coast location, which features elegant colonial architecture. Both venues will have a projector and multiple screens for easy viewing, and as you enjoy the matches you can fuel up on European eats such as Whole Roasted Spring Chicken, Pico Burgers and Pinto Pizzas. For something lighter, dig into some of the bar snacks – we like the sound of the sizzling-hot buffalo wings and deep-fried mozzarella sticks. Note that pre-bookings are required for matches starting later than midnight. Psst… Take advantage of special deals during the tournament. Enjoy a choice of pizza and a bucket of beers (Peroni, Steinlager, Sol or Greatwhite) at $60 nett, and take your pick of yummy pizzas from the à la carte menu, with vegetarian options available. 6342 0382 | East Coast: 382 Joo Chiat Road 6877 1191 | Bukit Timah: 60 Fairways Drive picotin.com.sg | events@picotin.com.sg

1-Altitude

1-Altitude FIFA World Cup
How about a sky high match experience at 1-Altitude?

Catch the FIFA World Cup under the stars at 1-Altitude this June and July. The popular rooftop bar will be screening all matches and will be transformed to look like a football stadium for the occasion. Besides enjoying sunset and sky-high views of the city, you’ll be entertained by the alfresco bar’s regular daily line-up of tunes from live local bands and the bar’s six resident DJs. There’ll be seven screens and TVs set up strategically for easy viewing of the tournament, with not a minute of the action missed. On selected match days, the entertainment, food and drinks will be themed according to the countries of the teams that are playing. Psst… Cover charges for selected match dates are $35 (inclusive of two premium pours before 9pm) and $45 (inclusive of two premium pours after 9pm). Enjoy exclusive FIFA World Cup beverage packages including World Cup Shooters going at six for $50 and 12 for $80. Brewerkz Riverside Point

Brewerkz FIFA world cup
Head to Brewerkz this FIFA season

Gather your soccer buddies and head to Brewerkz, which will be decked out in sports memorabilia and FIFA World Cup team flags. The restaurant and bar has 17 TVs and three projectors, all strategically placed, ensuring that everyone gets a great view of the goals. Enjoy a super-vibrant atmosphere from the first kick-off to the final whistle as you cheer for your favourite team. Snack on finger food such as chips and salsa, or the crowd favourite chilli cheese fries. Cool down with Brewerkz’s full menu of beverages and a great selection of premium craft beer, going for as low as $10 after 10pm. Psst… Get your game on with soccer bingo and discounts on jugs of beer with every goal scored. Also, be sure to take part in the lucky draw (16 to 28 June) where you’ll stand to win a year’s supply of premium craft beer. Private screenings are also available. #01-05/06 Riverside Point, 30 Merchant Road 6438 7438 | eventsales@menu.com.sg | brewerkz.com

Harry’s

Harry's Boat Quay Bar FIFA world cup
Catch the World Cup matches at Harry’s

Head to one of the Harry’s bars across town and catch the action on flat-screen TVs, with additional large screens at the Dempsey Hill and Boat Quay outlets. All outlets will be showing all the matches (except Keong Saik, which is only showing the free-to-air fixtures). Tuck into favourites such as Harry’s signature wings in tasty sriracha and masala flavours, or, for something more hearty, beer-battered fish and chips, or a sharing platter featuring the likes of squid skewers and Tandoori chicken. While you’re there, try the craft beers and unique beer cocktails. And don’t miss the Budweiser Viewing Parties on 16 June (5pm, Tampines), 22 June (7pm, Boat Quay) and 15 July (10pm, Clarke Quay) where there will be fun games and F&B deals to enjoy. Psst… Enjoy twin pints from $20 onwards and Budweiser bucket deal (five bottles) from $49. There’ll also be a one-for-one promotion on burgers, sandwiches, pastas and salads. Guys: did you know that your skin is structurally different from that of ladies? For most men, androgen (testosterone) stimulation results in skin that’s thicker and tougher than women’s skin. This also means you might need something more than just your wife’s, mum’s or sister’s moisturiser or face wash!

Lumin was founded on this concept; this California-based online store offers simple yet effective skincare for men, tailored to different skin types and concerns. So, whether you’re looking for a good face cleanser or a moisturiser for men, this is one brand to check out.

To differentiate Lumin from other men’s skincare brands, founders Richard Hong and Darwish Gani flew to South Korea to work on formulas that benefit the thicker and more stubborn skin constructs of men. Most of the ingredients used are powerful plant-based extracts like ginger root, rosemary, coffee and shea butter. The paraben-free and cruelty-free brand also makes a point of avoiding unnecessary nasties commonly associated with popular off-the-shelf products.

If it’s your first time shopping for men’s skincare, you’ll be glad to know that the Lumin experience is simple and fuss-free. Just fill out a brief questionnaire and you’ll get a personalised skincare regime that’s suited to your skin type and lifestyle. You can choose to go with a one-time purchase or have your products delivered on a subscription basis. Alternatively, shop from the curated range of skincare sets catered to different budgets and preferences.

The rain and cold winds getting you down? A warm beverage and maybe a good book to snuggle up to might just chase the blues away!

If hot chocolate is too mainstream for you, could we offer up this red velvet alternative? @littlefarms have a wide selection of oat milks, almond milks and soy milk options.

Since it's #Veganuary, we recommend using dairy free milks to recreate this recipe....

2 cups non-dairy milk of choice
4 medjool dates (pitted)
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1/2 teaspoon beet powder

Add the milk and dates into a saucepan.
Heat, over medium, until it reaches a simmer. Add the warm milk with the dates and the remaining ingredients into a high speed blender.
Blend until completely smooth and creamy. Serve and enjoy!

As we welcome the start of a new year, it’s time to look back at the year that was.

Obviously, a standard review of 2020 would be dominated by one global issue, however, we’ve decided to avoid any mention of the C-word and instead, we’re taking a look at some of the other things that happened in 2020
month by month, from pop culture phenomena to mystery objects in our deserts and skies (full link in our stories)
