To most of us “oldies”, Originals is in our homes – and in our blood! Just have a look at the black-and-white homes in the May issue of our magazine, and so many of the homes we have in each issue, and you can see that it is one of the most recommended home décor stores in Singapore. We talk to JASDEP SINGH about where it all began, and what makes it relevant – and special – today.
Tell us about the Originals story.
Geri Murphy wanted to do something different as the Singapore furniture market then was very repetitive and many stores were selling similar products. She wanted to bring fresh ideas and unique furniture to Singapore.
In the early days, we brought in beautiful pieces from India, including older ones, incredible signature pieces and centrepieces that worked well even in contemporary homes.
From the beginning, Originals was about curating furniture, not just selling furniture. Our focus is on well-made products, ethically sourced and produced furniture, thoughtful design, authentic materials and good customer service.
Originals is also about passionate people and authenticity. We’re not trying to be the cheapest or trendiest; we want to offer furniture that is interesting, well made, and built to last.
What has 25 years in the furniture industry taught you?
There are no shortcuts in furniture. Good furniture takes time to source, design and produce.
Everything starts with the right materials, and you also need skilled craftsmen and good factories. We still work with some carpenters and suppliers from our early years. Over time, we have learned how to improve designs and create exceptional pieces.
We also believe in transparent and consistent pricing. So, we don’t mark up prices to mark them down later, we don’t run big sales, and we try to price fairly all year round.
Why does craftsmanship still matter?
People have been crafting furniture in Asia for thousands of years. We work with craftsmen who have generational knowledge and skills. Handmade and well-crafted furniture has better quality, more character and a longer lifespan.
We focus on combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design, because if furniture is too mass-produced, it can feel soulless. We want furniture to feel warm, natural and authentic.
What else is Originals about?
There’s a relationship behind every piece we sell, and I think we value relationships more than transactions. Over 25 years, we have built long relationships with suppliers and customers. Many customers come back multiple times over the years. Some customers have moved overseas and taken Originals furniture with them around the world.
We believe furniture should improve your life and make you happy.
A word from Rebecca
“I have a couple of beautiful old Indian mirrors, two Indian doors we use as dividers and two comfy linen sofas in my home. And I have moved them around Singapore with me! Take a look at Originals online, but also take the time to head to their beautiful warehouse showroom. The way it is set out gives you so many ideas for your own home too.”
Originals is at 1 Bukit Batok Street 22, Level 5.
