We meet CONG LEI, the new owner of Yoga+ Studio, and find out what students can expect from the Pilates, yoga, breathwork and barre classes at the holistic centre on Killiney Road.
The art of qi in yoga, Pilates and barre classes
Yoga+ Studio has long been a fixture of Singapore’s wellness community. Now, under the ownership of Cong Lei, it has transformed into a holistic sanctuary, with the introduction of her signature Qi-ology Method.
Qi-ology is based on Cong’s belief that “every movement must serve the breath, and every breath must fuel vitality”. She adds, “The breath is not a side-effect of movement – it’s the measure of whether your movement is actually healthy.”
The name derives from the ancient concept of qi, which is the flow of energy in the body. By regulating the body’s qi, obstructions that compromise the flow of cellular respiration, fascial chains and nervous system regulation are removed.
Qi-ology marries ancient wisdom and philosophy from the East with modern biomechanics and physiology from the West. It’s accessible to anyone, from those recovering from injury or surgery to those experiencing age-related changes in vitality and balance, individuals whose posture has collapsed under years of desk work, and high-performers who maintain a demanding fitness routine but feel inexplicably depleted.
“If you breathe, Qi-ology is for you!” says Cong.
New breath, new life on Killiney Road
Whether it’s yoga, Pilates, barre, breathwork or the signature Qi-ology Method, the same foundational best practices of yoga pervade each class at Yoga+ Studio. Sessions combine biomechanically sound movement with breathwork as the guide for achieving health in both body and mind.
Cong explains, “When you understand how breath and structure interact, the poses stop being challenges and start being conversations.”
Classes are deliberately capped at an intimate 12 students, giving each student the space to fully expand their body and breath effortlessly. “In a sea of faces, it’s easy for the purpose of your practice to get lost. We want every single person to get the attention they want and need.”
Head to Yoga+ Studio to see what has changed and explore the next phase of your wellness journey.
About Cong Lei and her journey to owning Yoga+ Studio
Born in China, Cong grew up immersed in the living traditions of Eastern philosophy, from the flowing logic of Taiji to the meditative stillness of Qigong and the ancient Daoist text, Daodejing (circa 400 BC), with insights on natural energy and effortless action. She would later recognise these as the blueprint for the human body in motion.
Moving to Singapore, she found herself at a fascinating crossroad. Entering into dialogue with Western science and fitness culture, she trained rigorously in yoga, Pilates, barre and strength-based exercise while studying Meridian Theory and Fascial Chain science. S h e also undertook human cadaver dissection as part of her research into how the body’s structural and functional systems truly interact.
Of her combined experiences, she says, “You can’t teach the body from a diagram; you need to understand it – how tissue connects, how tension travels, how breath actually moves through a living system.”
Yoga+ Studio is at 89A Killiney Road.
