We spend a lot of time in and around water in Singapore (such as unfenced condo pools), so getting our children to swim confidently should be high priority. According to the Singapore Medical Journal, most drownings occur between zero and nine years of age, so the younger they learn, the better. For adults, swimming is a great way to keep fit, especially if you learn to swim properly. Being a strong swimmer is also important if you’re spending time in the pool and sea with the kids. Australian swimming school State Swim has made its way to Singapore, and offers swimming classes for all ages, from babies to adults. We find out more about it.
When did it all begin and what can we expect?
State Swim has been teaching generations of Aussies to swim for over 40 years. Founded by former Australian National Swimming Coach David Urry, the swimming school has won many awards across the years.
The school believes in honing techniques that build a good swimming foundation, and introducing new skills to keep kids challenged and motivated. Lessons are available all-year-around at State Swim; you can easily book them online and pay a monthly fee. If you’re unable to attend a lesson, you even get a make-up voucher to be used at a later date.
What swimming classes are offered?
Just for kids
Swim and Play
Ideal for little ones from six months, Swim & Play is a two-stage programme focusing on building confidence and water familiarisation in a fun and safe environment. The learning begins with the Waterbabies classes that make use of water-based activities and catchy rhymes. Kids will then progress to the Kindergarten classes where they learn essential skills such as blowing bubbles, submerging, floating and a simple underarm swim stroke.
Learn to Swim
When kids are ready, they graduate and move along to the Learn To Swim – 400 Gold programme. This takes children step by step through important swimming skills such as the four competitive strokes and deep survival skills. Awards and certificates are handed out through each stage to keep kids motivated and excited to learn. Graduates of the 400 Gold programme are awarded the 400 Gold certificate, which recognises them as strong and safe swimmers.
Health and Sport
Graduates of the 400 Gold programme can join the Health and Sport programme, where they’ll develop strength, speed and endurance. The team-based training programme focuses on intensive training, stroke development, time trials and fitness in general.
For adults
The swim school has a selection of classes suitable for adults (18 and above) of all levels, from Learn to Swim, Stroke Development, and Swim for Fitness to Specialty Squad Training. You can learn at your own pace in a relaxing environment.
