Men’s sexual health is often overlooked in conversations around ageing well – but it shouldn’t be, according to DR JULIAN NG of men’s health clinic Hisential Orchard Clinic. Here, he shares his opinions on why prioritising sexual wellbeing (including preventing sexually transmitted infections, or STIs) can lead to a healthier, more vibrant life in the later years.

Sexual health isn’t only about performance – it’s also about emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. Regular sexual activity has been linked to various benefits that extend beyond pleasure, including:
- Better immune function
- Reduced risk of heart disease
- Improved sleep
- Lower stress and anxiety
- Boosted self-esteem
In addition, a fulfilling sex life contributes to stronger relationships and may even be linked to increased longevity. However, maintaining sexual health means staying proactive in preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and addressing health concerns early.
Ageing and sexual health
As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline. This can affect libido, energy levels and sexual performance. Conditions like heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes – which often emerge in midlife – can also interfere with sexual health, contributing to issues like erectile dysfunction (ED). However, sexual health is not purely physical. Emotional intimacy, open communication with your partner and mental wellbeing are just as important for maintaining a satisfying sex life.
What you can do
To maintain sexual health as you age, here are some key steps:
- Stay active – exercise boosts circulation and hormone balance.
- Eat a heart-healthy diet – whatever benefits the heart also supports sexual function.
- Manage stress – chronic stress can lower testosterone and contribute to ED.
- Prioritise sleep – sleep quality impacts both libido and performance.
- Talk to your doctor – don’t ignore changes in your sexual health. Treatment options such as medication or testosterone therapy at a men’s health clinic may help if needed.
Why regular testing for STIs matters
Even in long-term relationships or older age, regular testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remains crucial. Here’s why:
- STIs can often be asymptomatic – you or your partner may be unaware of an infection.
- Early detection allows for early treatment, reducing the risk of complications such as infertility, chronic pain and the spread of HIV.
- Regular testing at men’s health clinics promotes transparency and trust, fostering open conversations about sexual health and boundaries in relationships.
STIs and HPV vaccination: yes, it’s for males too
HPV is the most common STI and it can also affect men, leading to genital warts and increasing the risk of penile, anal and throat cancers. While some infections clear up on their own, others may lead to long-term health problems.
The HPV vaccine is recommended for men aged up to 45. Studies have shown that the infections have two peak ages: one in adolescence and young adulthood and another after the age of 40. The vaccine is proven to reduce HPV infections by over 90 percent, offering protection against the strains most likely to cause cancer and warts.
HIV prevention
Another crucial aspect of sexual health is HIV prevention. These are especially important for men who are at higher risk of exposure. Using modern treatments such as PrEP, PEP and DoxyPEP in combination with preventive measures like regular testing and vaccination at a men’s health clinic can significantly reduce the risk of contracting HIV and other STIs, helping you maintain your sexual health and overall wellbeing.
Takeaway: Sexual health is preventive health
Your sexual health impacts your relationships, mental health and even longevity. By being proactive, you protect not just yourself but also your partners. Healthy sexual habits contribute to a long, vibrant life, making sexual health a vital component of your overall healthspan.
