QUICKIE
I borrow $50 from Mum and $50 from Dad – so, $100 total. I buy a shirt that costs $97, so I have $3 in change. Then give $1 to Mum and $1 to Dad and I keep $1. I now owe Mum $49 and Dad $49, which equals $98 in total. Plus I kept $1; that makes $99. Where’s the missing dollar?
Answer: There isn’t a “missing dollar”. You had $100 and spent $97, and then you gave $1 to your Mum and $1 to your Dad, and kept $1. So, you now owe them $49 each, and you have $1 of your own that you can begin repay them with. Then you’ll need to find another $97 to be square with them!
