So you’ve been eating healthy, exercising regularly and lost a bit of weight… but you’re still not seeing much improvement in those problem areas? Body contouring procedures may be well worth considering, especially with plastic surgery techniques in Singapore becoming more refined these days. Here, we chat with DR PEARLIE TAN, founder of Pearl Plastic Surgery, Laser & Scar Clinic, who specialises in procedures like rib remodelling, diastasis recti repair, liposuction and tummy tucks. Plus, we find out what she enjoys about her work!
Tell us a bit about your background and what drew you to plastic surgery.
I graduated from medical school in London before returning to Singapore after working as a junior surgeon in the UK. I completed specialist training in Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery in Singapore, followed by a craniofacial fellowship in Taiwan. Later, I led the Plastic Surgery Service at Sengkang General Hospital before moving into private practice.
I’ve always been keenly aware of how one’s looks can affect the way one feels. I remember my mum telling me that when I was a child, a mother pulled her own child away from me and said “Don’t go near her, she’s diseased!”. My mum replied, “She is not diseased, she has eczema.” Later, as a student on elective in India, I encountered patients with a cleft lip or palate and severe burn injuries for the first time. Witnessing how profoundly these conditions affected not only the patients but also their families made a lasting impression on me. It reinforced my belief that plastic surgery is not just about physical restoration, but about restoring dignity and quality of life.
In particular with mummy makeovers, as a mother of two, I completely understand and relate to the challenges women face with their bodies after pregnancy. But many mothers feel guilty about investing in themselves. Even for me, I have to remind myself that by taking care of my own wellbeing, I’m setting an example for my children. They learn from me that self-care is not indulgence, but a form of self-love and self-respect.
What are some common body contouring surgeries you perform in Singapore, and who are they for?
Body contouring procedures are designed to create a slimmer, more defined silhouette. For women, common procedures include breast lifts to restore shape and position after pregnancy or weight changes, as well as abdominal contouring through liposuction, repair of diastasis recti, or tummy tuck procedures. Increasingly, techniques such as rib remodelling are used to create a more defined waistline. Arm and thigh contouring, sometimes combined with radiofrequency-assisted lipolysis (RFAL) for skin tightening, is also popular.
For men, gynecomastia surgery and liposuction are commonly performed to improve chest and abdominal contours. In selected cases, fat grafting can enhance muscle definition for a more sculpted appearance.
How is body contouring different from fat loss?
Body contouring focuses on reshaping rather than reducing overall weight. It refines proportions and definition. In simple terms, it’s about sculpting the body rather than making it smaller.
Have you noticed any shifts in trends or patient expectations at Pearl Plastic Surgery, Laser & Scar Clinic?
Yes, patients who are interested in body contouring plastic surgery in Singapore today are more informed and are seeking natural results with minimal downtime. A growing group includes the post-pregnancy woman who has lost weight but still has a persistent abdominal bulge due to diastasis recti or is still unable to zip up their old dresses due to a widened rib cage. These patients often have minimal excess skin, making them unsuitable for traditional tummy tucks, but liposuction alone is insufficient. They are looking for tailored solutions addressing their specific concerns.
How do you determine who is a suitable candidate?
Careful patient selection and preparation are essential for safety and good outcomes. I assess overall health and body composition using bioimpedance analysis, and perform ultrasound when I suspect diastasis recti. Just as important is understanding the patient’s goals and ensuring they are realistic and achievable. If there are underlying medical issues, I address those first.
The ideal candidate is someone healthy, well-informed and committed to maintaining their results.
How long do results last?
I often tell my patients that body contouring is a bit like investing in something you truly value, whether it’s a beautiful handbag or a sports car. Once you have it, you naturally want to take care of it. Body contouring often creates a positive cycle: patients feel better, which encourages healthier habits, helping sustain their results over time.
Are there any new techniques in body contouring you’re excited about?
There is a clear shift towards achieving maximum results with minimal scars and downtime. What we’re seeing now is the rise of what I would call “full-body remodelling” where we address multiple contour elements at once: fat distribution, waistline definition, muscle contour and skin quality, through carefully planned, minimally invasive techniques. This can include high-definition liposuction using small, well-hidden incisions, ultrasound-guided rib remodelling to create a narrower waist, and minimally invasive approaches to abdominal repair, such as correcting rectus diastasis laparoscopically without the need for a full traditional tummy tuck.
In selected cases, fat grafting can also be used to subtly enhance muscle definition. The goal is natural-looking results, with faster recovery and minimal visible scarring.
What advice would you give someone considering body contouring surgeries in Singapore?
Be clear about your goals and choose a qualified specialist, your safety should always come first. It’s also important to be discerning. Many non-invasive treatments are heavily marketed but may deliver limited results. While more invasive procedures can feel daunting, when performed by a trained specialist, they are safe and provide more meaningful, lasting outcomes.
And if you’ve been thinking about body contouring plastic surgery in Singapore for a while, start with a consultation. Having clarity is often the most empowering first step.
What do you love most about what you do?
Being able to help people become the best version of themselves. The patients I see are not trying to become someone else; they simply want to refine what they already have, whether it’s their face or body.
What makes this work especially rewarding is seeing the ripple effect. When patients feel better about themselves, it often translates into how they carry themselves, how they engage with others, and even how they take care of their overall wellbeing.
