Want to know more about getting a labiaplasty in Singapore – and whether it’s for you?
Women’s labia naturally come in all different shapes and sizes – but if you’ve ever felt a little self-conscious about yours, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, according to DR LEE HANJING from Argent Plastic Surgery, more women in Singapore are turning to labiaplasty – a procedure that reshapes or reduces the labia – as a way to boost confidence, improve intimate wellbeing and in some cases, ease physical discomfort. Here, she breaks down what the procedure involves (plus, why it’s not quite the same as vaginal rejuvenation).
What exactly is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that redesigns and rejuvenates the appearance of the clitoris and labia – the folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening. The surgery can involve trimming, reshaping or removing excess tissue of the clitoral hood and labia minora, as well as volumisation of the labia majora.
It is generally performed for aesthetic reasons – either for women born with larger or asymmetrical labia or who experience changes to their labia after childbirth or with ageing. My goal is to help women feel more comfortable and confident in their own skin.
Who typically comes to you for this procedure?
Many patients come to me because they experience prolonged physical discomfort or irritation during exercise or sex. Some women come for aesthetic reasons or because they feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia. Labiaplasty is a popular procedure here at Argent Plastic Surgery – I’ve found that women generally feel more comfortable discussing this region with a female plastic surgeon.
Is there a “normal” when it comes to labia shape or size?
No! Labia come in all shapes, sizes, colours and lengths. There isn’t one correct look. It’s actually very common for one’s labia to be asymmetrical or to change its appearance over time. But if your labia are causing you physical discomfort or affecting your confidence, it’s worth looking into.
Who’s a good candidate for labiaplasty – and who isn’t?
A good candidate is someone over 18 who experiences ongoing discomfort or who wants to feel more confident. She should be in good general health and have realistic expectations. I would say, however, that anyone who feels like they’re being pressured into it should reconsider. It needs to be a personal choice.
I just had a baby! Can I undergo labiaplasty?
There’s no formal period for how long someone should wait after childbirth before considering labiaplasty. It really depends on how your body is healing and how you’re feeling, so have a thorough discussion with your plastic surgeon. Here at Argent Plastic Surgery, labiaplasty can be and is often done with other procedures as part of a “mummy makeover” surgery.
Walk us through how labiaplasty is done at Argent Plastic Surgery.
It starts with a detailed consultation to discuss what the patient wants. The procedure itself can be done under local anaesthesia or sedation. It usually takes about one to three hours, depending on how many specific procedures are done. There might be mild soreness afterwards. We usually advise seven to ten days of downtime and no sex or exercise for around six weeks.
Afterwards, we will ensure that you have all the post-operative medications provided and we’ll teach you how to ensure proper hygiene and cleansing of the area.
Will labiaplasty leave scars or affect sensation down there?
No – when done by an experienced surgeon, the scarring is very minimal and usually barely visible. Nerve damage is also very rare. There may be some mild numbness after your procedure, as with any surgery, but it is short-lived.
Will my labia still look natural afterwards?
Yes! The goal is always to create a natural look that prioritises proportion and symmetry of the labia. Look for an MOH-accredited, board-certified plastic surgeon in Singapore who you trust. Skilled surgeons use techniques to help maintain the natural appearance of your labia.
Is labiaplasty the same as vaginal rejuvenation?
A lot of people confuse vaginal rejuvenation with labiaplasty, but they are actually two different treatments that address different concerns. Vaginal rejuvenation targets the vaginal canal, which over time and with childbirth tends to enlarge and become drier. It can be managed with repeated laser treatments to tighten the canal or surgery for better tightening effect in a single session. Labiaplasty, on the other hand, will always need surgery to resect the excess skin.
