There are lots of things to take into consideration when shopping for kids’ furniture. You will want pieces that are safe and sturdy, but that will also appeal to your children. Here are three readers’ accounts of how they picked pieces for their children’s rooms and which are their favourite kids’ furniture stores.
Joanna, Stefano, Matteo and Luca Nizza, Singaporean-Italian
When I became pregnant with my second child, my son Matteo was two-and-a-half years old and still sleeping in his cot. The baby would need the cot when he arrived, so we decided it was the right time to get Matteo a “big-boy bed” for his third birthday. Our original intention was just to buy a simple bed. However, when we stepped into the Flexa shop, we ended up buying much more: a mid-high bed with a slanting ladder, Oeko-Tex certified non-allergenic mattress, play curtains, play cave, storage pockets, backrest supports, bookcase, carpet and the Play series table with stool, chairs and storage bench!
Flexa offered great quality and durability (solid European wood treated with hardwearing non-toxic and solvent-free lacquer), beautiful and imaginative designs, and thoughtful safety features including no sharp edges, anti-slip ladder and more. The Flexa modular system was very attractive to us as we thought ahead to when Matteo and Luca would share a room; a bunk bed could easily be added onto the existing bed.
Matteo absolutely loves his “very awesome big-boy bed” and has a lot of fun sleeping in it and playing around it. His little brother also enjoys climbing the lo’s wallpaper and his playful character. With Flexa, we were able to create a gorgeous, fun bedroom and environment for him. Being in Matteo’s room makes me happy too! The boys also love using their play table for art lessons and snack time. We really love our Flexa items, and would definitely buy from them again!
Hatainuch Kamhaengna, Thai, with her husband, and sons Paolo and Fabio
Our place was originally furnished when we rented it. As time went by, we developed a good relationship with our landlord and really wanted to make the house a home by purchasing our own furniture.
We started with the kids’ room, exploring almost every store in the process! The idea was to add some fun to their room, but it needed to meet our quality, safety and style expectations. More importantly, it had to last. We chose Gautier for the quality of the manufacturing and craftsmanship. Also, they offered a contemporary style that would go well with the rest of the house.
Our purchases included a Dimix bunk bed in a chocolate colour. The Dimix range is versatile, space-saving and durable; it also meets European standards for up to 200kg weight capacity – not to mention, it looks great too.
My kids love it! They like climbing up and down – a bunk bed is fun. The steps are wide enough for them to grip and hold themselves. This helps prevent injuries.
Since we got the bed, the kids play more in their room, and all the toys are also stored here. They’ve learned how to tidy up afterwards, which is what we wanted to teach them.
I’m a very happy customer! I’ll absolutely recommend Gautier and most importantly the salesperson, Kelyne Choo, for the excellent after-sales service. I’ll definitely look to Gautier again.
The Lee family, Singaporean
Our son is about to turn two and we felt it was time he had his own room and furniture. We wanted to design a room that was exciting and that he would love exploring and spending time in as he grows older.
We were looking for furniture with good, solid materials and a clean design to maximise our space. We chose Kuhl Home because of the high quality of their furniture, how well thought out the designs were, and how aesthetically pleasing the pieces looked. The modular nature of the items and the lifetime design philosophy gave us confidence that what we bought would last and grow together with our son (and the size of our family).
We bought almost everything in the room from Kuhl Home: bed with canopy, wardrobe, bookcase, reading lamp and various boxes, shelves and holders mounted to maximise our wall storage in the limited space we had. We wanted everything in our son’s room to fit together. It also makes it easier to buy everything from one place. Our son loves his new room and enjoys scrambling about exploring the new nooks and crannies, and tumbling on his new bed. We’re happy with our purchase and would certainly consider buying from them in the future.
