After a furious wrestle with uniforms, a frantic race out the door and frustrating traffic on the PIE, you’d be forgiven for fantasising about a delicious, smooth creamy coffee after finally seeing the kids through the gates. Forget shoving together an instant coffee between getting the little ones ready and finding the always-missing-when-you’re-late car keys, we’ve tracked down lovely places to stop for a cuppa right next door to different international schools. So whether you fancy some you-time alone or a relaxed coffee date with the other mums, these places near your kids’ schools open early and will leave you feeling refreshed and energised for the day ahead.


Australian International School Singapore

Spot: Rokeby

A laid-back modern Australian inspired bistro serving delectable gourmet food and artisan coffee. Coffee beans are freshly roasted from Western Australia and gourmet teas imported from Melbourne. There’s also a kids’ area where you can park the little ones and enjoy your cuppa with no worries.

Caffeine Fix: Single/double ristretto/espresso, Piccolo latte iced latte, macchiato and the usual choices. For extra flavouring add caramel, vanilla or hazelnut.

Morning Munch: Full Monty Brekkie Rokeby (eggs, sausages, bacons, beans, salad and toast), Vegemite Down Under (scrambled eggs, melted cheese on vegemite toast), foie gras benedict.

Spot: Jones The Grocer

An expat favourite for excellent food and drinks!

Spot: Baker & Cook

Only five minutes from the school and open super early, head to artisanal bakery Baker & Cook for quality coffee and breakfast.

Caffeine Fix: They serveAllpress coffee from New Zealand. Choices include macchiato, piccolo, cappuccino and more.

Morning Munch: Assorted breads, sweet buns, sandwiches and pastries. Bagels, panini, spinach omelette and eggs Benedict are also available.

Canadian International School and Odyssey The Global Preschool

Both of these schools are located within 100 metres of each other, and there are lots of lovely places to grab a better-than-your-average coffee and more.

Spot: Penny University

Penny University is an artisanal cafe that serves all-day breakfast, a rotating selection of fresh pastries and cakes, and great coffee with their favourite local blends.

Caffeine Fix: Basically pick and choose your method. Espresso only, espresso with milk and choice of extra shot of chocolate or vanilla syrup.

Morning Munch: Honey infused Greek yogurt with granola; Turkish eggs; Cheese toasties with marmite and tomato or poached eggs; sourdough toast with Earl Grey and fig jam.

A simple café serving all the basics along Tanjong Katong Road.

Morning Munch: Does what it says on the tin! A wide variety of pies from beef shepherd to exotic Asian Tom Yum flavour to accompany your latte. One to take the hubby along to, perhaps.

Just five minutes away from Canadian International School, Rabbit Carrot Gun is a rustic bed and breakfast with a café. It’s nicely decorated with wooden furniture for that charming ‘olden days’ feel.

OK, so there aren’t many hip indie cafes serving artisanal coffees around these parts, but there are plenty of good, safe bets for caffeine.

Spot: Spinelli Coffee Co.

Caffeine Fix: Choose from espresso beverages and freshly brewed coffee. Have it hot or cold and customise it any way you like, whether it’s adding a shot of English toffee or opting for soy milk.

United World College of South East Asia (Dover Campus), Nexus International School, International Community School

Parents sending off their kids to any of these schools can grab a quick (or leisurely long) bite at any of the below places. Plenty of the usual coffee houses like Starbucks and Tully’s Coffee at West Coast Plaza are open early – otherwise, you can travel a bit more for the expats’ favourite haunt, Holland Village.
