Disco curls and 90s blowouts are back! That means that styling your hair is likely going to involve some heat this year. Unfortunately, straightening and blow drying turns my coloured curly locks into straw-like frizz and gives me a dry scalp. That was until I tried the Kevin Murphy Blow.Dry Wash & Rinse range with a heat-protectant spray for hair. Now I’ve found these styling curly hair products that will also protect against more damage. The secret is in natural ingredients like Australian wood bark combined with skincare technology.
Don’t have curls? No worries, Kevin Murphy has all the options in the range to suit any desired hair style, from adding bounce and lift to smoothing and thickening. The simple three-step hair process also uses a vegan, plant-based concoction that hydrates and nourishes with several options for different results.
Reviewing Kevin Murphy Blow.Dry products
Whether it’s straightening, blow drying or using other hot tools, I’m sure many can relate to stressed-out hair and breakage. To combat these common problems, Kevin Murphy has designed a vegan shampoo, conditioner and heat protectant spray for hair to help reduce styling friction and damage. The solution is treating hair care in the same way as skincare.
The result when I tried the range of styling products with my curly hair was the ability to blow dry faster than ever, just using my everyday hairbrush. And, while my hair was still a bit frizzy (as is the case with blow drying curls), after a few waves of a straightening wand to tame flyaways, my hair still felt healthy, glossy and light. Plus my blonde balayage looked brand new again.
#1 Blow.Dry Wash
Over the past decade, the focus of beauty and haircare has increasingly centred around natural ingredients. Kevin Murphy shampoo is no exception. The sulphate-free hair wash includes extracts from hydrolysed pea protein and blue and white cypress, and lemon aspenwood bark forming a wood complex. Add rice proteins and vegan amino acid derivatives that mimic natural creatine, and you have heat protection for hair and skin. The combination of these ingredients strengthens your hair while the water-soluble phyto-acids help to bind moisture and prevent breakage.
Instead of the squeaky clean feeling I get from other shampoos, my hair felt non-greasy, nourished and light. Plus, I could rest assured my colour was safe – and my scalp has felt fantastic with no signs of dandruff or irritation!
#2 Blow.Dry Rinse
When I opened the conditioner bottle, the first thing I fell in love with was the fresh scent of this product. The second thing was the smooth and creamy feel of the conditioner. After leaving it in for two minutes, I barely had anything to wash out because my hair absorbed it so quickly. Plus, there was no oily sheen I’ve experienced with other conditioners and treatments.
What makes it work? The repairing conditioner forms a protective layer to guard against colour loss and environmental stress, including the humid Singapore air! While it’s also infused with wood bark, the standout ingredients are rice bran oil and shea butter that create soft healthy locks, natural shine and help repair brittleness.
#3 Blow.Dry Ever Smooth Spray
In addition to cypress and lemon aspen extracts, this hair and heat protectant spray is made from long chain polymers. These heat-activated polymers self-organise on the hair shaft to lock in condition, volume and style.
During this stage in the process, I was pleasantly surprised by the light and moisturising coverage on my wet hair, even when spraying liberally. Using the hair and heat protectant spray, some sections of my hair blow dried without any extra frizz or the product build-up I’ve experienced from other heat sprays.
My experience styling curly hair with these products involved less frizz than usual and the ends of my hair looked healthy and soft.
The Kevin.Murphy packaging
I was very impressed by the bottles and the spray packaging of these products. Instead of the bulky, bright eyesores you can usually find on my shower floor, the square shape of the bottles fit together perfectly and take up minimal room. They also come in soft neutral colours for a clean and classic look to blend into most bathrooms.
Final thoughts on styling curly hair products
I often question whether it’s worth splurging on hair care especially for hair styling in Singapore. The truth is, if you have coloured hair and you blow dry or use hot tools often, these products are worth the money. The wash, rinse and spray together come to $154, and you make up for the cost by saving time and more importantly by protecting your scalp and hair when styling in Singapore’s humid air. After using Kevin Murphy products, my unruly tresses have been noticeably more healthy and nourished.
