We find out all about tennis bracelets in Singapore from AARTI SONAWALA, the founder of bespoke jewellery brand ART N ASH.
What is a tennis bracelet?
A tennis bracelet is usually a flexible line of identically sized gemstones, usually diamonds, that encircles the wrist, set in white, yellow or rose gold. However, that is what is referred to as a traditional or classic tennis bracelet. Now we offer more modern versions too, which include various shapes and sizes of diamonds.
Why is it called a tennis bracelet?
It gained its name after tennis player Chris Evert’s diamond bracelet broke and fell off during a 1987 match, causing a temporary pause of the match, leading to worldwide admiration of the bracelet and thus giving it its name – the tennis bracelet! The design has since evolved with more secure clasps and is available in various gemstones and metals.
What’s the advantage of buying a tennis bracelet from ART N ASH?
I can make it to maximise your spend. Depending on your budget, you can choose the size, shape, colour and clarity of the diamonds, whether they are lab or natural diamonds, as well as the karat of gold.
I also make them slightly differently. The most common style is usually a square setting where there’s more gold; I do a “U” setting, which means there’s less gold and more light so that the diamonds shine more. Also, with gold jumping in price recently, this is currently quite a cost advantage.
How much do tennis bracelets cost?
It varies depending on your design and also your wrist size. We have made tennis bracelets that cost from $2,000 up to $50,000! Also remember that 12 to 15 grams of gold is used for tennis bracelets, much more than a ring, which is usually 3 to 5 grams.
How do you measure your wrist ?
To measure for a diamond tennis bracelet, use a flexible tape or string to find your wrist’s circumference where you’d wear it, then add half an inch to an inch depending on your preference for a snug or loose fit. Keep in mind that tennis bracelets are often adjustable but should allow movement without breaking.
Which “C” is more important to consider when buying tennis bracelets?
Understanding the four C’s is very important when buying jewellery. In this case, the most important is the cut, as the overall brightness of a diamond is enhanced by its light reflection.
- Round Brilliant Cut: The most sought-after shape, maximising sparkle and fire.
- Princess Cut: A modern and elegant square shape.
- Emerald Cut: Known for its sleek, sophisticated appeal with step-cut facets, but without as much shine as a round diamond.
- Oval & Cushion Cut: Unique alternatives that offer a distinct brilliance.
What about metal options?

You can choose between a 10K, 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold – the obvious factor being cost. So, if you are on a tight budget, choose 10K gold; while it isn’t as pure as 18K gold, it’s still commonly used all over the world.
How do I choose the perfect piece?
It’s always personal. For example, there’s also a version with multi-shape diamonds, which I wear – more of a modern take on tennis bracelets.
Nowadays, it’s all about stacking: creating a personalised, layered effect by stacking tennis bracelets of different widths, cuts and designs.
Combining a delicate, thin tennis bracelet with a chunkier or more textured piece produces a striking contrast that draws attention and adds dimension to your wrist.
What are some cool ways to wear these bracelets?
The Solo Statement: Sometimes, less really is more. A single, high-quality diamond tennis bracelet creates a minimalist, elegant look that speaks volumes.
The Daily Layer: For a casual or chic office look, try layering two or three dainty bracelets of different textures (like a gold rope chain with the tennis bracelet).
The Mix-Up: Don’t be afraid to mix metals!Wearing silver and gold together is a modern, fashion-forward effect that adds depth to your outfit.
