Restaurant review: Pontini Italian in Singapore

Pontini Italian Restaurant
Grand Copthorne Hotel, 392 Havelock Road

This may not be the first restaurant that springs to mind when you’re thinking red-hot romance. During the day, it appears starkly lit and a tad formal. At night, though, it was positively seductive. Candles shimmered and Michele Pavanello’s fine food would have melted even the hardest of hearts.

His special Valentine’s Day menu begins with a flirty dish of amberjack carpaccio with asparagus and aragula salad; beautifully presented asparagus swirled around a small island of crisp salad and fish. Next, we savoured the flavour-filled Silkie hen tortelli with a morel mushroom sauce that perked up the palate.

For mains, we sampled both the baked Malabar snapper Sardinian-style, and the rack of lamb with grilled aubergines. Slow-cooked to perfection, the lamb melted on the tongue, and was the winner of the night. The husband, who likes to complain when meat is tough or too fatty, proclaimed it splendid.

We finished with a decadent amaretti biscuit parfait served with warm chocolate soup.

Service was attentive, without being intrusive. The Valentine’s Day menu (subject to change) costs $188++ per couple.
