A bedroom is a sanctuary. It’s where we go to sleep and where we enjoy time alone with our partners. A bedroom is for hiding from the world, hunkering down with a good book or preening and posing in a new outfit. In short, it is one of the most important rooms in the house. Here’s a first-hand look at some of our readers’ favourite shops for bedroom furniture.

“We brought most of our furniture with us, but it’s been fun picking up a few extra pieces for our double-storey, semi-detached house. We heard about Art Trend Gallery through a friend who had some furniture made there and we went to have a look.
“For my daughter, we bought a lovely, white timber sleigh-bed frame. It’s very girly and she loves the princess-y feel. For my son, I had a bed frame made to match existing bedside tables. We decided to go for a simple but boyish look and he loves it. For our bedroom, we had a bed frame and side tables made.
“We thought the service was great. Joanne took care of everything for me and even came to our home to get the right measurements. It was really nice to be able to show someone a picture and have something similar made for us.”

“We have lived in Brussels, Paris and Saudi Arabia and acquired furnishings from all over the world since we sold our house and left California in 1994. In Singapore, we live in a three-level, semi-detached house and our European furnishings were not exactly ideal for the contemporary feel of the house – that’s where Design Intervention came in.
“My first experience with Design Intervention was a complete redo of my teenage daughter’s bedroom. She loved it and so did her friends, all of whom said her room was ‘so cool’. For the master bedroom, we wanted a king-size, four-poster bed built to US-standard measurements. We were pleased to find that Design Intervention specialises in bespoke furnishings created exactly to customers’ specification by their in-house furniture design team and interior architects.
“For instance, Nikki came up with the perfect solution to disguise an ugly wall in our master bedroom – having a curtain made to cover it. It adds warmth to the room and we can use it again if we ever move. Design Intervention also helped me beautifully restore and re-upholster a 1940s loveseat that was in terrible condition. In the end, Design Intervention also provided us with draperies, a bedspread, cushions, and night-table lamps with custom-made lampshades. It really is one-stop shopping!”

“We have a house in Norway, where my husband is from, but we brought all our furniture with us to Singapore, where we stay in a ground-floor unit in a light-filled, modern condo.
“When we wanted a teak bed-frame for our American king-sized mattress, our interior designer Sakiko Kaneda Cramer of Studio Sakimo recommended Gallery 278 because they use quality recycled teak and can customise a bed frame to very detailed requirements. Gallery 278 also made us a pair of freestanding night tables that house a pullout table and drawer (the whole unit fits under the bed), and three spacious storage boxes with 360-degree wheels for easy manoeuvring. Given that teak furniture can be heavy and dominating, we are very pleased with the refined and delicate design of our pieces.
“We were impressed with the staff’s wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm about furniture-making. Their suggestions were excellent aesthetically, functionally and ergonomically. After our pieces were delivered, we requested that the wheels of the storage boxes be replaced to better suit our flooring and they came straight over to take a look. Within a matter of a day or two we got everything the way we wanted. Throughout the process, we felt that we were in very good hands.”

“We live in a new condo called The Sail. It has very modern interiors and is very white. We had most of our furniture shipped to Singapore from our home in Sydney a year ago, but we needed a sofa bed. I admired one at the Citadines serviced apartments where I stayed when I first arrived, and they told me it was from Only Zest Living so I went and had a look.
“I found their service excellent. Yana, the salesperson, provided plenty of colour and fabric options to choose from, and kept me updated with regard to the quick delivery of the sofa bed. My three-piece sofa bed in orange PVC fabric certainly stands out against the bright apartment walls. I love it!”

“We sold our place in Paris, put all our furniture in storage and came to Singapore with only clothes, plates, toys for the kids and absolutely no furniture. When we went to Originals, we knew we had found the right place and would have liked to buy the entire shop – I had to restrain myself in order to avoid our flat looking like an Originals showroom!
“In Singapore, we live in new, low-rise condo and our apartment is very bright and modern, with lots of windows. As we also like antiques, our home style could be described as a mixture of old and new. We bought quite a bit at Originals, including a bed and a dressing table. The bed is a new one with a simple and modern shape made in an excellent natural teak. The dressing table is a wooden antique from Rajasthan, painted in joyful colours.
“The service at Originals has always been perfect. The staff members welcome you warmly and we appreciate their good advice about furniture maintenance. Even our four-year-old twins like the shop a lot because they have their own little place for drawing while we look around.”

“As most of our furniture had been with us since our first posting in Germany 28 years ago, we decided it was time for something new. For our detached, multi-level house here we wanted furniture that was as solid and well made as our German furniture had been, and modern but with an Asian twist. We had specific ideas, so we wanted custom-made pieces. For instance, for the guest bedroom we needed a long dresser made to our own specs, with space for a mini-bar fridge and shelving for a DVD player.
“Rebecca and Dino at Origin Asia were ‘yes, can’ about all our ideas and were always just a phone call away when we had any queries. We ended up buying most of our furniture for the house from them, including a master bed and side tables and everything for the guest bedroom. We’ve also purchased storage cupboards and cabinets, the latest one to store (read: hide) the paints that my husband insists on using in the living room; he paints while watching TV.
“We’ve been delighted with every piece that’s been made for us. It’s all solid teak, made well and exactly to our requirements. We’re set for the next 28 years!”

“We are well-seasoned expatriates who keep on collecting more and more for our large, six-bedroom house near the Bukit Timah nature reserve. I wanted a new bed and as we are a tall family, I bought a super-king-size one from The Shophouse. (I only hope that it will fit into our next house – it is big!)
My dear friend Laura Bartlett, who owns the place, has transformed it into a beautiful interiors shop. She has great taste and a knack for understanding her clients’ needs. For instance, I chose the wrong bedside tables initially but Laura exchanged those for me, no questions asked.
The selection is good and the shop is looking so beautiful. The combination of dark wooden furniture with the Pure Earth home accessories that Laura imports from India is very attractive.

“We left all of our furniture in our London flat when we moved to Singapore recently, so we needed to buy everything. We heard about Windows to the Past from our estate agent and also from a work colleague and wound up buying a master bed, queen and twin beds for the spare rooms, side tables and lamps there.
“We live in a very spacious and modern one-level condo with high ceilings, large windows and lots of light. It was like entering a big white cube when we first moved in, so we have tried to inject colour with paintings and rugs. The master king bed we bought from Windows to the Past is a two-poster in a dark wooden frame and I’m thrilled with it. Our furniture style is classic with a modern twist and we really admire both the antique and contemporary styles offered at Windows to the Past.
“What I personally like most about the shop is that they have a warehouse onsite which customers can explore. It’s like Aladdin’s cave, full to the brim with all kinds of beautiful furniture sourced from around the region.”
