Opening in January 2026 in Changi Business Park, the new RD American School (RDAS) will offer an American education in a private school setting. The school is currently accepting its first group of Grade K to 12 students. We hear about what’s in store from Elementary Principal GARY BRADSHAW.

What’s different about the American education offered at RDAS?
Our exclusive partnership with Riverdale Country School enables us to bring decades of research‑grounded expertise in neuroscience and cognitive psychology into the American education we’re providing. We blend the proven excellence of Riverdale Country School’s curriculum with demanding US schooling standards and innovative practices from around the world. This ensures each child at RDAS receives a truly world-class American education.

Our educators benefit from ongoing professional development led by Dr Kevin Mattingly of Columbia University Teachers College. Dr Mattingly specialises in translating the science of learning into daily classroom practice. This ensures that our teaching is not only engaging but also research‑informed and effective.
Looking ahead, our new American school is committed to establishing itself as a distinctive choice within the nation’s educational landscape. We aim to nurture resilient and purposeful learners. That they become young people who flourish academically, socially and ethically, prepared to lead and make an impact in the 21st century.
Tell us a bit about how elementary students learn at RD American School.
Our approach centres on 21st-century skills essential for thriving in our rapidly changing world. These include creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, character, global citizenship and innovation.
Elementary students at our new American school will lead their own learning so that learning will feel like play. Each child will collaborate with their teacher to set meaningful learning goals. In this way, each child’s distinctive interests become integrated into their learning journey. In the process, they’re building the foundation for academic achievement while celebrating growth and gaining confidence.
Through hands-on inquiry, students dive into big themes such as chocolate, the brain, toys, rainforests, exploring themselves, Singapore and the wider world.
Our classes are intentionally small – class sizes are capped at 20 students. This ensures that every learner is known and receives support.
Experienced teachers, specialists and learning assistants will focus on each child as an individual. Our team will help each child pursue their interests while building strong academic foundations through the American curriculum.

How do the new school’s campus facilities support the American curriculum on offer?
The RDAS campus is designed around the needs of learning rather than the constraints of traditional classrooms. Open, flexible studios filled with natural light support collaboration, curiosity and real‑world problem solving. Spaces adapt to the type of learning taking place, encouraging agency, creativity, and confident expression.
The learning environment is both unique in design and rich in experiences. From their very first days, students will become part of a close community where learning is active, joyful and shared. Our goal is for children to discover that school is a place of curiosity, challenge and excitement – where they not only grow but flourish.

How is student growth tracked?
Assessment is done differently at RDAS. Rather than a score, we celebrate each child’s growth in real time. This means that feedback is ongoing and personal – a teacher could be asking a learner questions during a project or offer a new strategy to try. Learners also play an active role in reflecting on their learning. During learner-led conferences, they share their challenges and set their own goals.
Parents will see portfolios filled with journal entries, art and reflections that show a child’s progress over time. More than what they know, these show how each child has grown.
