THE RIDDLER
Feeling mathematically minded? Have a crack at these puzzles.
- Seven people meet at a party, and each person shakes hands only once with each of the others. How many handshakes are there in total?
- I am a number. If you take 15 away from me and then divide the result by 3, the answer is 5. What number am I?
- You are standing eight feet away from a door. With each move, you cover half the distance to the door. How many moves does it take to reach the door?
Answers:
#1 21 (6+5+4+3+2+1). The first person shakes hands with all six other people; the second person has already shaken hands with the first person, but then shakes hands with the other five; the third person has had two handshakes already, but then also shakes hands with the other four; and so on.
#2 The answer is 30 because (30 – 15) / 3 = 5
#3 You’ll never reach the door, because each time you move, you will still only cover half the distance to the door, no matter how small the distance.
