As part of their hands-on learning at Mosaic Play Academy, Primary 2 children in the after-school enrichment programmes helped to organise orientation for their new Primary 1 friends – complete with a fair for parents!
Planning and rehearsals
The orientation was slated to run from 9am to 2pm over two days in December. The teachers of Mosaic Play Academy teachers had already developed a framework for the event. A group of eight to ten Primary 2 children then took initiative to plan how they wanted to run the event.
Splitting themselves into groups, they were assigned different spaces in the venue to introduce to parents. They scripted and rehearsed how they would do this. The children also planned what they would like to do for the fair. They decided on selling lemonade, succulents and handmade friendship bracelets. Together, they came up with the price points for all the products and the look for the lemonade stand.
Owning the event
On the first day of orientation at Mosaic Play Academy, the older children greeted their new younger friends. After playing icebreaker games together, everyone settled down for the day’s hands-on learning activities. The first half of the day involved creating items for the fair. One group created their own special pots for planting the succulents. Another group beaded the handmade friendship bracelets. When these were done, they worked together on setting up the lemonade stand with recycled materials.
The next day, the children greeted the parents and brought them on the location tour. At the fair, the children managed the booths with assistance from the teachers. Some children engaged parents with sharing what they did to pull together the fair, while others promoted the items to be sold or helped with tracking sold items, or served up the freshly made lemonade.
Proceeds raised through the sales of the fair were given to Beyond Social Services, chosen by the children.
Hear from a teacher…
“The Primary 2 children have been with the after-school programme at Mosaic Play Academy for a year and this initiative was a heartwarming showcase of the type of growth our afterschool programme fosters in our students. The fair became a hands-on learning in entrepreneurship and communication. It was inspiring to witness their first foray into selling, where they eagerly learned about product benefits and persuasive techniques. Their teamwork in promoting products showcased a beautiful collaborative spirit, with each child supporting the other in making a sale. It also highlighted their honed communication skills from our drama enrichment programmes.” – Latifah Yeo, After School Programme Manager
Hear from a student…
“The fair was my favourite part of the day! I liked selling bracelets to the parents. The colours were nice and each bracelet was unique. I felt proud that I sold the bracelets to both my parents and my friends’ parents.” – Anya Chew, 7, Ngee Ann Primary
