Thinking about getting dental veneers in Singapore? These thin, custom-made shells are designed to improve the appearance of your teeth. However, before committing to the process, it’s important as always to understand your options and what’s involved. Are porcelain or composite resin veneers better for you? How much do they cost? Is the process painful? Here, Expat Dental founders Dr Shaun Thompson and Dr Matt Thompson answer a few of our questions.
What are dental veneers and what are they for?
Dental veneers are thin coverings applied to the front surfaces of teeth, designed to improve their appearance. Crafted from high-quality materials like tooth-coloured composite or porcelain, they’re great for addressing various cosmetic concerns, such as:
- Chips and cracks: Veneers may restore a smooth and uniform surface while strengthening teeth with minor cracks.
- Tooth discolouration: They may help mask stains and discolouration that don’t respond to whitening treatments.
- Gaps and irregularities: Veneers may help close small gaps and correct minor shape or size irregularities, creating a more symmetrical and harmonious smile.
- Uneven teeth: Veneers could help improve the alignment and overall appearance of the smile by creating a uniform and balanced look.
What are the different types of dental veneers in Singapore?
Think of dental veneers as a makeover for your smile – different materials, styles and benefits, all tailored to fit your unique needs. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide:
Porcelain veneers: Made from premium porcelain, these veneers have a natural, translucent appearance. They are designed for durability and stain resistance, offering results that can last with proper care.
Composite resin veneers: A cost-effective option, these veneers are crafted from tooth-coloured resin applied directly to the teeth. While they can achieve pleasing results, they may require more regular maintenance compared to porcelain.
“No-prep” veneers: These ultra-thin porcelain veneers are a minimally invasive option, requiring little to no tooth preparation before being bonded to the teeth. They are designed to provide a more natural appearance and may enhance the aesthetics of your smile without extensive dental work. With proper care, they offer durable results comparable to traditional porcelain veneers.
Zirconia veneers: Known for their strength and durability, zirconia veneers are often recommended for individuals with heavily worn teeth or those who grind their teeth frequently. They are designed to provide both functional support and an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
What are the pros and cons of veneers?
Dental veneers are more than a cosmetic treatment. They can also support the functionality of your smile. By covering stains, cracks and gaps, veneers may help create a smoother and more natural appearance. For teeth that are worn or compromised, veneers could provide an aesthetic improvement while also supporting and reinforcing the teeth’s structural integrity when appropriately placed and cared for.
However, veneers are a commitment worth careful thought. Traditional veneers usually involve reshaping the natural tooth to ensure a proper fit, making this an irreversible procedure. “No-prep” veneers offer a less invasive alternative but may not suit every case. Additionally, veneers may not be appropriate for individuals with advanced gum disease or significant misalignment, as these conditions require addressing underlying issues before veneers can be placed. Ultimately, veneers can be transformative, but achieving the best results requires a thorough consultation to determine the right approach for your needs and goals.
Have there been any recent advancements in dental veneer technology?
Recent advancements in materials and digital tools have made veneers more precise, durable and natural-looking than ever before. Modern ceramic materials can closely mimic the appearance of natural tooth enamel, while 3D printing and milling techniques have enhanced accuracy and efficiency in crafting veneers.
Digital imaging tools are now commonly used to design veneers with precision, offering a detailed representation of the patient’s smile. Technologies such as computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) contribute to improved accuracy and consistency in veneer production.
At Expat Dental, we collaborate with a European company that has patented technology to design and fabricate “no-prep” veneers. These veneers are custom-made based on digital designs of the patient’s smile and can be bonded directly to the teeth. This streamlined process may be completed in a single appointment, depending on the patient’s case. It’s important to note that not all patients are suitable candidates for “no-prep” veneers. Your dentist will assess your case and recommend the most appropriate treatment option to meet your individual needs.
Walk us through the process of getting dental veneers in Singapore at Expat Dental.
Our Smile Transformation service is designed to help patients achieve their smile goals through precision and personalisation. Every treatment plan is tailored to the individual, considering their unique needs, schedule and budget.
The process begins with an initial consultation to discuss concerns, expectations and potential treatment options. In addition to in-clinic consultations, we also offer remote design consultations, allowing patients to review potential smile designs virtually. To ensure accuracy, we use diagnostic x-rays, photographs, videos and intra-oral 3D scanners to gather detailed data about the patient’s teeth and facial structure.
One unique feature of the process is the Trial Smile, a digitally designed prosthetic that can be temporarily placed over the patient’s natural teeth. This step allows patients to preview the proposed design, reducing the risk of unmet expectations and enabling adjustments before committing to the final veneers.
If traditional veneers are required, the treatment typically involves two appointments approximately seven to 10 days apart. The first appointment focuses on preparing and scanning the teeth, while the second is for fitting the final veneers. During this period, temporary veneers are provided, giving patients an opportunity to experience and assess the design while the final veneers are crafted by labs and master ceramists.
Additionally, we collaborate with labs and ceramists globally to ensure that each smile design is executed with precision and care. These partnerships allow us to offer patients treatment options that align with their goals while maintaining a high standard of craftsmanship.
Are dental veneers painful?
The process of getting dental veneers is generally not considered painful. While the procedure is typically well-tolerated, individual experiences may vary based on personal sensitivity levels.
Some patients may feel mild discomfort or temporary sensitivity during or after the procedure, particularly if tooth preparation is required. However, these sensations are usually manageable and subside quickly. Your dentist will take steps to prioritise your comfort throughout the process.
What is the cost of dental veneers in Singapore?
We understand that every patient’s needs are unique, which is why we avoid a one-size-fits-all approach to pricing. The cost of veneers varies based on the materials used and the complexity of the treatment plan. Your dentist will discuss a detailed estimate during your consultation.
We offer flexibility to accommodate different budgets while ensuring high-quality care. As a guide, premium veneers typically start at $1,400 per tooth. Your dentist will work closely with you to explore the most suitable options for your smile goals and budget.
