Bilingual education in Singapore: Laying a strong bilingual foundation for life

Updated on 29th September 2016 by Jessamy Smit |

One of the many perks to living in Singapore is the opportunity to immerse our children in a multi-lingual environment, and selecting the right fit for your little ones’ first educational experience can give them a jump-start in life. EtonHouse has been educating nursery and pre-school children in Singapore since 1995, with their specially designed Inquire Think Learn curriculum based on how young children best learn. This month, the renowned EtonHouse is hosting an open house at their new, bilingual preschool campus at Upper Bukit Timah. For those closer to the southern tip of Singapore, EtonHouse will also open a brand new Sentosa campus, with an open house scheduled next month.

At EtonHouse, children are immersed in an integrated bilingual environment, where classrooms have an English and a Mandarin-speaking teacher interacting with the children in their respective languages at all times. With exposure to both languages, children are able to think and understand concepts in two different languages, communicating effectively in both. This language-learning takes place in a natural environment, with an emphasis on the development of literacy, numeracy, and performing and creative arts.

The new Mandarin Immersion Program at EtonHouse Bilingual Pre-School is an inquiry-based program delivered entirely in Mandarin in the nursery years, and in a bilingual English and Mandarin environment in the kindergarten levels. The program is specially designed based on extensive, on-going research on language-learning in the early years. Research shows that a Mandarin immersion program in the early years of pre-school establishes a very strong Mandarin language foundation for later in life.

The curriculum at the EtonHouse Bukit Timah Campus emphasizes Chinese cultural experiences such as Chinese art (painting and calligraphy), performing arts (music, dance, and drama), literature (stories, rhymes, and poems), as well as festivities. The learning environment is created using beautiful Chinese culture and tradition, in a warm, home-like space. The curriculum lays a strong, bilingual foundation in the early years, developing competent and confident global learners, who can effectively communicate in both English and Mandarin.

The Mandarin Culture Studio at Eton House

When you attend one of the upcoming open houses, you’ll see that EtonHouse utilizes their state-of-the-art facilities, including a dedicated library, rooftop garden, spacious indoor playground, sensory corridors, and specialist studios. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the school’s passionate team of educators, and learn how EtonHouse’s literacy and numeracy strategies can help develop your little ones into confident learners.

The EtonHouse Upper Bukit Timah Campus’ Open House will be held on Saturday, July 25th from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be sharing sessions by the alumni and kindergarten children from 9:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., a NeuroCeramics workshop at 11:30 a.m., a soccer trial at 12:30 p.m., dance at 1:30 p.m., and a Lego workshop at 2 p.m. To register, please visit www.etonhouse.com.sg/215BT, and enjoy an exclusive waiver of registration fee. You can also email 215BT@etonhouse.edu.sg, or call +65 6762 3322 for more information.

The Sentosa Campus Open Day will be held on Saturday, August 29th from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can register online at www.etonhouse.com.sg/sentosa, and questions can be answered by calling +65 6377 3322, or emailing sentosa@etonhouse.edu.sg

How cute! Love this Easter twist on devilled eggs 🐣Thanks @expat_kitchen! Instructions below ✨ Full recipe on our site
.
.
.
.Instructions:1. Peel hard-boiled eggs. With a sharp knife, slice off a very thin layer from the base of the egg so it can stand. Cut a generous top off the egg, and set top aside. Using a small melon baller, scoop out the yolk carefully (be careful not to break the white part!).
2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine 10 cooked yolks and mash well with a fork. Add mayonnaise, Dijon, garlic powder and salt. Mash everything together until smooth. Transfer mixture to Ziploc or pastry bag and pipe generously into egg bases. Place top 1/3 back over the base and press down slightly to adhere.
3. For the eyes, poke through an olive with a plastic straw several times, then gently squeeze down the straw, and the little circles of olives will pop right out. For the beaks, thinly slice a few rings of carrot and cut each ring into sixths. Insert two olive spots for the eyes and two carrots wedges for the beak. Set chicks on a platter and garnish with noodles, or parsley or dill to give them that “free range” feel.
