Tried and tested: Moisturising products by Kiehl’s

Moisturiser is an important part of your beauty regime, and it’s important to use one that suits your skin type. Finding the right one can be tricky, though, especially if your skin seems to have changed since you arrived in Singapore. Four EL readers, in search of the perfect moisturiser, tested ones from Kiehl’s.

Wanting to get rid of pigmentation

I have fair combination skin that tans easily and is, thankfully, clear. However, pigmentation has plagued me since I became a mum seven years ago. I’ve tried a host of whitening products, peels and other remedies, only to be disappointed time and again.

Living in Singapore and spending a lot of time outdoors – even with factor 50 sun block applied to my face – doesn’t help, and some new blotches have appeared, much to my dismay.

Before buying beauty products, I always smell them. Testers are a must: I can take note of how oily, heavy or light a product feels on my skin and how long it takes to be absorbed. The morning-after feeling is just as important – I need to feel moisturised, not oiled.

After using the Kiehl’s Clearly Corrective White Deep Moisture Clarifying Cream ($80) morning and night for 22 days, I see a huge difference in the horrid brown blotches on my face – they are undeniably lighter. What I love most about the product is its minimal fragrance; it smells clean. Although the cream was light, if I applied more than a fingertip-sized blob to my face, it would cause oiliness overnight, especially around the nose and upper lip area.

I would definitely recommend using this cream for stubborn pigmentation, but apply minimally and religiously. There’s a definite tingle when using it after a good face wash, but that means it’s working. I can honestly say it has worked, and I’m thrilled with the result.

Wanting a shine-free face

Singapore’s climate, while warm and sunny, is dogged by humidity that leaves me with a shiny nose. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream ( $48 ) claims to be a “non-oily, quickly absorbed hydrator that visibly reduces the appearance of oil and leaves skin looking and feeling more balanced”.

I tested it for three weeks and found the gel consistency very cooling. It did also do what it claimed, leaving me shine-free for a few hours after application. However, it doesn’t include any sun protection factor (SPF), so this needs to be applied on top, which of course results in the return of the shiny nose.

Would I buy it regularly? I’m not sure. Although it leaves me shine-free, it has a cooling effect rather than a moisturising one, and as someone who is regularly outdoors I do tend to prefer moisturisers with sunscreen. This cream would be more suitable for office workers, or those with limited sun exposure.

Seeking to reduce wrinkles

Now that I’m in my mid-30s, I’m interested in anti-ageing products that fight off wrinkles, reduced elasticity and other signs of ageing. I usually go for trusted brands or ones highly recommended by a friend, so I was really happy to try Kiehl’s Powerful Wrinkle and Pore Reducing Cream ($80).

After a few days of using the product, I noticed that my skin was much smoother and not as blotchy. Many moisturisers leave an oily residue on my skin or make me break out, but this one didn’t. I really liked the texture and the smell, and it seemed to be very hydrating, too. I even noticed my pores become less visible after application. I also love the soft, creamy texture and the way my skin absorbed is easily. It contains no synthetic fragrance, which is a good thing.

However, I haven’t been using it long enough to see any visible wrinkle reduction. Despite that, I’m satisfied with the results and will continue using it. I would definitely recommend this to any of my friends.

Looking for hydrations without breakouts

One of the many challenges I faced when relocating to Singapore was the difficulty in finding the right products for my face. I have acne-prone, oily skin, so it’s extremely difficult for me to find a moisturiser that will not cause breakouts. I also enjoy an active outdoor lifestyle, which, unfortunately, has wreaked havoc on my skin. Despite the high humidity, my face seems to lack hydration, though it has become oily since I moved here.

At first, I thought the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream ( $48) was going to be too thick. Instead, it’s silky-smooth and glides onto my skin without leaving any oily residue. It also hydrates my face for the entire day, with no need to reapply. I could actually feel the dryness disappear and my face become smooth and refreshed. After using it for a week, my face felt healthy and moisturised. And the best part? No breakouts! An added bonus is that the cream is unscented.

I have continued using the cream and highly recommend anyone with dry skin in Singapore to give it a try. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream delivers on its promise of being an all-day hydrator for your skin. Not only is Kiehl’s a brand you can trust, but their products are made with naturally derived ingredients.
