Seriously cool designer furniture

16th April 2019 by Kel Flanders 2 Min Read

If you’ve lived in Europe, you’ll probably be familiar with Swiss furniture store Vitra. With a knack for launching design pieces that go on to be worldwide names – Panton and Prouvé are two examples – the brand has just opened its first dedicated store in Asia. It’s right here in Singapore, in the Tan Boon Liat Building. MIACARLA NG, Marketing Director of Vitra’s local partner W.Atelier, tells us more.

Why should we be excited about a Swiss furniture store opening?

One of the things that drew us to work with Vitra is its focus on originality. The company’s designers and manufacturers work together to dedicate their time, expertise and craftsmanship to create new products. Vitra look at objects as being more than just “things” – it’s their special talent. The aim is to design a product that not only looks great but also creates a unique experience. The company’s main ethos is about improving the quality of homes, offices and public spaces through the power of good design. This is something I think we can identify with in Singapore.

Vitra also has emphasis on sustainability and longevity, both of which are integral to the design process. The philosophy is that original pieces don’t get older, they just become more beautiful.

What’s your favourite piece in the store and why do you love it?

The Polder Compact Sofa by Hella Jongerius, 2015. I literally did a double-take when I saw it the first time – the design is so different compared to its sofa counterparts. I couldn’t take my eyes off it! The design is unique, and to me it’s more than just a sofa, it’s literally a piece of Swiss furniture art.

Why did you choose to open Vitra in the Tan Boon Liat Building?

Over the years, the building has become a mecca for those seeking designer furniture, accessories and art. We’re hoping our presence encourages more international brands to come and join the community here; we want it to be a hub of thoughtful design and impeccable style in Singapore.

What can we expect from the new store?

The space is huge and bright! With over 400-square-metres showcasing furniture for the living room, dining room and home office, to formal and informal office systems. All adaptable to different living and working needs.

Products from the Vitra Home, Office and Accessories Collections will be available in the store, along with classic designs from the 20th century by Jean Prouvé, Verner Panton and Isamu Noguchi. There will also be key modern contemporary pieces by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Jasper Morrison, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby.

We’ll be hosting various events and activities in store. Plus there will be some different and interesting promotions along the way. Come and visit us!

Kel loves carrot cake (black, of course), brunch, French rosé and stinky cheese.  As a mum of two small humans and one large human (the husband), her precious spare time is spent hiding from her girls, eating (their) chocolate and reading a good teen-fantasy novel. Usually about vampires.
