Whether you’re a golfer or just a fan of watching great sport, you won’t want to miss the SMBC Singapore Open. It returns to the Serapong Course at the Sentosa Golf Club from 16 to 19 January 2020, with international stars and exciting golf-themed activities in the lineup. Here are just some of the highlights.
Popular players
England’s Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson from Sweden and American Matt Kuchar will be taking on the course this year. They are the three medallists from the last Olympics in Rio in 2016 – gold, silver and bronze respectively. Rose and Stenson have played in the Singapore Open before, with Rose tying for ninth in 2011 and Stenson just missing the cut in the same year. Kuchar will be competing for the first time in Singapore this year.
Currently ranked fourth in the world, Justin Rose became golf’s first Olympic champion when he won the gold medal in Rio. Last year, he won the FedEx Cup and achieved the number one spot on the Official World Golf Ranking. He has claimed 11 titles on the European Tour and 10 on the PGA Tour.
Henrik Stenson made history in 2013 by winning both the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai titles in the same season. Ranked 34th in the world, he teamed up with Justin Rose in the Ryder Cup in 2018 where they won both their foursomes matches.
Nine-time PGA Tour winner Matt Kuchar has won some of the biggest tournaments in golf, including the Players Championship in 2012 and the 2013 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. Currently ranked 21st in the world, he has been playing in the Ryder Cup for the past 10 years.
The course
Recently awarded “World’s Best Golf Club” at the sixth annual World Golf Awards, Sentosa Golf Club has hosted more than five globally broadcasted golfing events in just over a year. The club also snagged the title of “Singapore’s Best Golf Course” for its Serapong Course for the second time.
Family fun
There’ll be loads to keep the whole family entertained throughout the tournament. Located behind the 18th green of the Serapong Course, The Village @ 18th will have interactive golf-themed activities and games to try out. One-day general course passes are $20 (Thursday and Friday) and $30 (Saturday and Sunday), while season passes (all four days) are $60. It’s free admission for children aged 12 and below.
