At Singapore American School (SAS), giving international students a sense of belonging is part of the daily routine. We hear from the team about how relationships, routines and shared experiences across campus help a child feel known and at home – plus, a graduating varsity athlete shares how student support in school helped him excel in his chosen sport.

Why a sense of belonging matters
SAS recognises that students learn best when they feel safe and accepted. In elementary school, a sense of belonging is built through daily greetings, morning meetings, and classrooms designed for comfort and connection. These experiences help young learners feel secure, reduce anxiety and build confidence.
In middle school, advisory groups, collaborative learning and student voice help students navigate a time of rapid change. Feeling accepted lowers stress, strengthens self-esteem, and encourages students to take academic and social risks.

As high school students explore their interests and prepare for life beyond school. Student support comes from strong relationships with teachers, advisors and peers. A sense of belonging and connection leads to deeper engagement, resilience and personal growth.
With more than 50 student clubs and activities, Singapore American School offers countless ways for international students to find their people. From drama, performing arts, sports and music to visual arts and service-focused clubs, students can explore interests, express themselves and contribute meaningfully to the community. Clubs often bring together students across grade levels, making them a powerful way to build connections and feel included.

Spaces that provide student support in learning and connecting
Thoughtfully designed spaces across the Singapore American School campus give students choice in how they learn and connect. These include flexible elementary classrooms to collaborative and quiet areas in middle and high school.
Teaching approaches such as advisory, Interim Semester and Eagle Day strengthen relationships and school spirit. Supporting these approaches are caring educators who know their students well.

A welcoming community
Student support for transitions at SAS is available at every level. Buddy programmes, orientations, advisory groups, and peer support ensure new international students feel seen and supported from their first days at SAS. Families, too, are guided with clear communication and care.
Belonging at Singapore American School isn’t one programme — it’s lived daily in classrooms, clubs, conversations and connections.
For families navigating international moves, SAS offers a community where every international student can feel known, valued and truly at home.

Hear from a Singapore American School international student…
“I feel a deep sense of belonging and connection at Singapore American School because of our varsity rugby team. We practice five times a week: Monday through Thursday after school and Friday in the early morning before school. We share breakfast each Friday as a team, so we’re not just connected to the sport but to each other as a rugby family. I’ll take everything I’ve learned on and off the pitch with me when I play rugby at my university this upcoming Fall.
Sports have always been a core part of what it means to be an SAS Eagle for me. Since kindergarten, I’ve had access to so many sports and activities after school. As a two-season varsity athlete graduating this year, I know I can really challenge myself in sports I’m passionate about and specialise in. All because my coaches and teammates are really dedicated to the sport and each other as a team.” – Charlie Clark, Class of 2026
